Re: Delta being rude to Opal

He's adjusting a bit. Now he will walk away from her when asked and I can trust him off leash for short periods of time with supervision. :)

Re: Advice needed regarding trainer

I would definitely tell the daycare why you won't be returning to class. There is plenty of information about why such methods are harmful, physically and psychologically, for dogs! Asking for a refund is definitely appropriate too. Here are a couple links to at least get you started: https://www.an...

Re: Delta being rude to Opal

He gets humpy with dogs who worry him - stiff and confident dogs or larger dogs, especially larger females, but never Opal before now. He did very well with a larger male smooth collie this weekend, only getting humpy towards the end of a 2.5 hr hike with multiple off-leash plays with him and a male...

Delta being rude to Opal

I'm going to keep this fairly short. Delta (3 yo, intact) is now obsessed with humping Opal (9 yo, spayed, new health problems surfacing). I have to walk him on a leash through the house and even when we're closed in my room he goes through periods of whining pitifully to be let out to go hump her. ...

Re: Joint problems? Advice needed please!

When it comes to joint/muscle injuries and problems, I ask the dog sport people in my area where they go. They tend to know the best vets around in that area! If you know anyone who does agility or flyball for example, see if they have recommendations for a good vet who will try to get to the bottom...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Last week, we woke up to Opal bleeding from her inner thigh. As there's really nothing she would do to gain such a wound, Mom and Dad took her to the vet, where they cleaned it up and discovered it was some kind of mass. There's another on her other leg, right under her hip so you can't tell it's th...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Keeping your friend and her dog in my thoughts, Judy. :( It's a hard decision to make but it sounds like the time might have come. I should never be trusted with dates and organization. Just realized that our final KPA workshop is the same weekend as my brother's wedding...Gosh this is gonna be a ni...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Thanks y'all. He gets attention anywhere we go, even people stopping their cars to admire him on quiet roads. :) He let us know there was a third mouse in the trap this morning, and last night at 1am told me there was probably a loose critter in my closet. Didn't want to deal with it at 1am so we mo...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Speaking of small furry critters... Mom set up a humane live mouse trap last night. This morning, Delta said "hey, there's something in there!" but we were heading out to a consult so I told Mom when we got back home. Mom said she'd just checked and it was empty. Haha. Took her back there and showed...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Yay Bax. :D Let me know if you want good resources for hamster care; one of my friends is very involved in the small pets scene and knows where the good info is. She is often despairing at the info pet stores and most websites give lol!

Awww, adorable! :O How old is little Pitch? She looks very young!

I hope Bax considers hamsters odd enough to be out of his terrier territory in terms of extermination :P

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I should never be trusted with dates and organization. Just realized that our final KPA workshop is the same weekend as my brother's wedding. I am also extremely lucky, because the wedding is about an hour away from the workshop location, instead of in another state or something. Still, this does pr...

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

Aaah, a 5 generation pedigree definitely weights it a lot lower than it actually is. Take this graph from the site I linked earlier: http://i.imgur.com/ByeQcZO.png The green line, the 5 generation pedigree, puts the inbreeding of the Papillon at 4.5% in 2020. The 10 generation pedigree, the red line...

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

Frankly I was surprised the poodle was so low on the list! Still, the level of inbreeding is above that of a breeding from half-siblings (with no history of inbreeding). All the breeds have higher than ideal inbreeding, except for the sloughi. The sloughi was only added to the AKC last year, so I'm ...

Re: Why are breeds disappearing?

The GSD is actually at 28th most inbred of the breeds tested in the above study, with a COI of about 40%, genetically. As I said, with creativity and resources, you can have low inbreeding on paper that is not reflected in the actual DNA of the dog. A closed studbook means there is no new genetic ma...
