Re: Helping with a reactive dog

I always go with "What's the worst thing that could happen?" If I did that with Jasper I'd never leave the house  Seriously though... if a dog is barking and lunging at him from the far end of a lead, he and I usually just look at each other, say, 'Well, he's a silly dog, isn't he?' and ignore...

Re: Helping with a reactive dog

Actually I don't think I'd have a problem with Jasper at all, having seen him interacting with so many dogs over the years (has mingled freely with other lurchers on group lurcher walks on many occasions) - but yes, I'd certainly have to be cautious as if it went wrong it could go horribly wrong, pa...

Helping with a reactive dog

My friend has started a dog walking business, and one of her clients lives a couple of streets away. The dog, I would guess from photos, is a beardie x lurcher, though he has a fairly short/wide snout so maybe more beardie (or a bit of terrier) than pointy dog. He's reactive, and also nervous - my f...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Jasper is 'Muum, Muum, come and PLAY with me Mum, I'm bored, Mum!' Or 'Mum, come into the garden with me, I want you to be out there with me Mum, even if all I want to do is eat grass and have a wee' Luckily I managed to curtail his 'Oh, you want to play humpy?' response when I got up off the ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

How horribly stressful for you, LoQ :( I do hope there's a happy ending - let us know, won't you? My news - this idea that dogs are empathetic and understanding when you are ill or injured is complete BS, at least as far as Jasper is concerned. I had knee arthroscopy on Tuesday, and attempted a very...

Re: Dogs and babies

To be honest, options 1 & 2 were a little tongue-in-cheek... I'd see option 1 as a complete no-no (and knowing Jasper, DS2 and GF would be in full agreement), and option 2 is a looooooooong time to wait. So failing that, what is the earliest age at which a (well trained, obviously  ) child can...

Dogs and babies

Just say you were a young couple who wanted to have a dog and a baby... What would the best timing be? My instincts would be: 1) Forget the baby, just have a dog 2) Have the baby, get the dog when the child is more or less ready to leave home, so you never realise just how much each has curtailed yo...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

My mantra is " aggression is a behaviour, not a dog, but some are on shorter fuses than others" I am so stealing that  I'm wary of any model that aims to classify dog or human behaviour in different categories (e.g. Myers Briggs), even if the number of categories does grow exponentially as the...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

DS2 and GF have booked their wedding venue :D No longer the one in the Purbecks with a view over fields of rabbits (as that venue weren't good at getting back to them to discuss their plans). It's now going to be in the New Forest - where we pretty much gave up taking Jasper as he would invariably f...

Re: When getting a second dog goes right...

That makes sense, Nettle. I guess it's like doing something you're anxious about - say travelling, or going to a party where you won't know many people - but being with a confident partner/friend who you know will steer you through it and deal with any problems.

When getting a second dog goes right...

Someone on another dog forum has a stabij/stabyhoun. About 3 years old, very sensitive, slightly reactive to children, prams, men carrying boxes, some other dogs, strangers, anything out of the ordinary... They recently adopted a beagle cross, and the difference in the stabij has been profound - he'...

Canford Park SANG

No, I had no idea what SANG stands for either, but it is in fact 'suitable alternative natural grassland'. One has been created just over 4 miles from me, where previously there was a golf course. A property developer was required to develop it as a condition of building a new housing estate close b...

Re: Dog Park "Right of Way"

I'm not in the US, so I can't account for 'local custom', but I agree with Jacksdad. People with dogs who can rub along together shouldn't have their dogs' enjoyment curtailed by dogs with different needs. Apart from anything else, there aren't enough hours in the day to walk to the dog park, see an...
