Re: Same Sex Aggression

Thats a good question. I would think its to do with rivalry, ultimately , the aim of animals is to reproduce and members of the same sex are in competition with each other. Although our dogs are domesticated and most of neutered , i would think they still retain the same instinct as their wild cousi...

Re: 3 year old Collie scared of being sniffed

Bird , dont beat yourself up about this . Theres not much i can add to Mansbestfriends answer except to say its ok to stop other dogs approaching too close to your dog. I often block dogs coming up to my small ones. These sort of scuffles go on all the time at parks, they look worse than what they a...

Re: Puppy growling and lunging

glad you have made progress! Its never a straight line , there will always be a step back or to the side :) You have a tolerant cat ! You could try luring him away by waving a toy or tasty treat in front of his nose. Every interaction with your pup is a training session and they learn very quickly .

Re: Puppy growling and lunging

Ah poor pup . no wonder he doesnt like being picked up. Clever suggestions from Judy and mansbestfriend about the carrier or blanket. He needs to learn that being picked up isnt going to hurt him. Pups soon learn when someone is going to pick them up . usually you approach them directly and then ben...

Re: Dog aggression, niping, biting when petted or disturbed

I forgot to add that he before he bites he might be giving out stress body language signals that you havent noticed.
They can be very subtle , such as a lick flip or just tensing up .
If you do a search for Calming signals and stress you should find info about it and photos and explanations.

Re: Dog aggression, niping, biting when petted or disturbed

Sorry you are in this position . He must have had a hard time and is in a confused state and very anxious. he wants to be petted but then finds it too much so is in conflict. it can take months for dogs to really relax and recover from their past in a new home. One good thing is that he seems to be ...

Does he act like this an any other time? you going the right way about it by using treats etc . You can try to desensities him to being picked up . its late her...

Re: Remote controlled collar ?

Some dogs may find the vibration too powerful and scary as the collars dont too have many settings eg low and high so they aren't necessarily kinder than shock collars, some USvibe collars have more settings but they arent cheap .

Re: Dog with new aggressive behavior

I'd just like to add to a bit to the excellent advice already give. I think you are right when you said he was stressed from the move and being left alone for a longer time etc . focusing on something like food or a toy helps relieve frustration, boredom and stress but sounds to me that food has bec...

Re: dogs jealousy

Congratulations on your new puppy . how old is it and what breed is it and what breed is your other dog . I would read one of Gwen Bailys books either Perfect puppy or How to train a super pup for advice on how to bring up your pup . Its more likely your pup is initiating play with your older dog ra...

Re: Whats with all the spam !

as an alternative, perhaps there is a patch for phpbb that would auto-delete any post/thread, that was reported by three or more people. I know there is a patch for that with the vbulletin software. That's a good idea!. I was a Mod once on a small pet behaviour forum . never again! You get caught i...

Re: "Tilly" (Border Collie" chasing buses

I understand the Dogs Trust have behaviourists to help owners who have adopted dogs from them and are having problems.
Its worth contacting them.

In this thread viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18064 there is advice from jacksdad about desentisation that you can adapt for your dog.
