Out at a brewery and...
Some dog just got NASTY with Chance and he kept his cool. You know what he did? He stepped back and looked at me! I gave him a treat and retreated. The other dog was wound up, so when he calmed down I asked if it was okay if I gave a treat and treated him too. Overall a win:

Re: I’m back re: ESAs
Thank you all for your input! I will have a chat with my psychiatrist regarding Chance and will see what she thinks regarding ESA status.

I’m back re: ESAs
Hello! I’m back after a several years hiatus. We’ve been mostly good and have even added a few kitties (kit bulls) to our pack of pit bulls. I’m mostly back to ask about opinions regarding dog-reactive dogs as ESA or service dogs. Long story short my dog Chance is reactive to other dogs. He’s mostly...

Re: Droncit
This sounds like an allergic reaction. I would avoid praziquantel-containing products in the future, there are plenty of other dewormers available (and make sure he's on monthly heartworm and flea prevention to prevent future worm infections).

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Chance and I went on a run. There was a loose dog that ran straight up to us. My new running leash has a loop near me and a loop near him. I stopped, reassured him that he was a good boy, and threw one of the leash loops around his mouth as a makeshift muzzle. The dog ran up to us, sniffed his rear,...

Re: Pyometra advice please
If your dog has a pyometra, she needs a full spay. Leaving an ovary in a dog with a pyo will almost certainly ensure a stump pyo. Pyometras, in part, develope because of hormones (among other factors), and leaving the hormone source in is setting her up for problems. If she's six and has been throug...

Re: Advice on ageing dog?
Not really. You can scrape some stuff off, but you cannot scale under the gums where most disease is. Plus, I've seen horrific injuries to pets from non-anesthesia denials. In the United States, the AVMA (the main veterinary organization) has a very firm stance against non-anesthesia dentals. In my ...

Re: Would I be at fault?
Thanks all. Just a crap situation, and I hate that nasty little dogs and stupid people always seem to "win" in these scenarios. Had the other dog actually connected and bit Chance's leg, my guess that any formal complaints would fall on deaf ears. I've never lived in an area where people a...

Re: Would I be at fault?
There is no law that requires a 6' lead, but just a leash in general. The law does state that the leashed dog must be under "immediate and complete physical control" at all times, which was not the case with my neighbor and his land sharks. I hate to say it like this, but I have friends in...

Re: Advice on ageing dog?
Hi there, vet here.
My first advise would be to take your pup to a vet. There are many things that can cause behavioral changes and "slowing down." Have a vet examine her. I'd recommend a full blood check, and perhaps some pain medication (should your vet thinks it is appropriate).

Would I be at fault?
I had a small situation yesterday with my dog, Chance. He is a 5 year old, 50 lbs, neutered male pit bull who is on his best days, semi-tolerant of other dogs. He lives happily with my other dog, Cricket, a spayed female staffy. Chance is my running buddy, and we run three times weekly. I have a nei...

Re: Apoquel
I'm a vet and frequently prescribe apoquel. I'd say I have about 95% satisfaction amongst my clients. Very rare adverse events - one dog gets pancreatitis every time she starts it (but also gets pancreatitis if she even thinks about eating table scraps; this was the first instance of this that Zoeti...

Wow, blast from the past. Bad moods must hit me in April, I've felt really lousy all month. Going back through these pictures put a smile on my face . God I love these two dogs, I don't know what I'd do without them.

Re: Dog with a medical problem being bullied by housemates
Thanks, I figured as much :| . From what she tells me these incidents happen when there's resources present and the little guy still has a pretty good quality of life. The little dude still bounces around the exam room when I see him. Unfortunately she's also going through some health problems, so i...

Re: Help! Mystery skin condition, even vet is stumped. *Diagnosis: Lupus.
SLE is extremely rare in dogs. It can pretty much behave like any condition and the test for it is definitely not routinely done. I know with the dermatologic form of lupus we use steroids and other immunosuppressives, I would imagine that it's similar for the systemic form?
