Just a quick reply because I'm exhausted, but explaining a behaviour is not the same as making excuses. I had a foster dog with me recently who bit when he was being groomed. I might well have said 'he bites because he's worried' which was true, but the other side of that is 'so I need to teach him ...

To be fair, she does say IF it is true, not that it definitely is. I've been a bit upset by some of the posts elsewhere and the venom directed towards Beverley and the magazine. Dogs Today has done a lot of good for dogs, and people are so quick to forget that :( Silly article by a silly woman, but ...

Yup! I really like Peter Neville's EMRA approach: ********************************************** EMRA: the new perspective in approaching companion animals by Peter Neville and Robert Falconer-Taylor. Address for correspondence: Centre Of Applied Pet Ethology (COAPE), PO Box 6, Fortrose, Ross-shire....

I think I agree with you, just use different terminology. I would describe 'aggression' as purely the behaviour (growling, barking, biting etc) but always think there is a cause - which is usually fear. I don't think there is such a thing as an 'aggressive' dog. Basically, I think it's real if it de...

Oh no, what a horrible thing to happen :( I can understand why your westie is frightened, I would be too! If he were mine, I would record a programme with lots of shouting, and play the tape at a very low volume that he doesn't react to, and then start pairing it with his dinner. Slowly, over time i...

As a dog trainer, I would not, in all conscience, advise anybody on a way to manage this situation. There are too many variables here, too many things that can go wrong that will end with your child getting hurt and your dog getting put down. If you want to sort the issue out, that's up to you, but ...

I don't think Owdb1tch was suggesting pit bulls don't make good family dogs, but that your dog isn't a good family dog. Being socialised isn't about intelligence, often more intelligent dogs can be more fearful and reactive (they remember things that scared them before!) and it's just not worth the ...

Hmm, lets think - do we know of any tv doggy celebrities? I've been thinking long and hard about a website aimed at information about dogs, that includes things like training advice, both sides of the neutering/vaccs/feeding debates, getting a dog (rescue or puppy). breeding dogs etc. I know ...

As someone who is VERY anti-aversive, I don't have a serious problem with these devices. There are lots of things in a dogs environment that are unpleasant if they investigate them (the fire for example, or a hedgehog) so dogs are not traumatised by it. If there was an aversive strapped to their nec...
