My dog is TERRIFIED of sirens! Please help me help him!

Ok normally, a dog could just be kept away from sirens and such loud noises, but my dog is in training to be a service dog. The other day I had him at a store. We were sitting in front of the store just observing people as they passed, as we often do. Then a fire truck and ambulance went by on the h...

Re: My dad wants to kill my dog, no joke. PLEASE help

Alright, I do realize now that he doesn't realize he has been bad. We NEVER hit him or attack him in any way, so I suppose my body language must be scary. I will try to watch that. That is an excellent idea to have a tub or tote to put the packages in, I will get one of those. Now that I am thinking...

My dad wants to kill my dog, no joke. PLEASE help

My dad often orders things online and they are shipped to our house. The company puts the package right inside the fence. If we are not outside when this happens, my dogs tears up the package and the contents of it, even if we are home and right inside. He doesn't even bark or anything when they com...

Old dog likes to sit on the table, NOT the place for a dog!

I work as a sitter for a woman who has several older dogs. One dog, a dachshund mix, is a bit too affectionate. When I first met the dogs, he jumped up onto my lap and I pet him. For the first few minutes I thought it was sweet. But in the next half hour or so, he jumped off, wandered around and sni...

Re: my dog HATES getting his nails trimmed. HELP!

Thanks, I will have a look at those links :)

I also looked up a "dog nail filing board" and found a site that tells you how to make one for fairly cheap, and it says it really works. I think I am going to try that. :)

Re: "Dancing" with my doggie

Thanks, I will try this with Charlie. I don't call it "heel" either. I just want him to stay at my side when I back up, turn, etc.

my dog HATES getting his nails trimmed. HELP!

My dog HATES nail trim time. I am slowly working with him on being more comfortable with his paws being touched, but he needs a nail trim NOW. I can't take him to a groomer because he struggles WAY too much. He is about 50 lbs, or 22.7 kg, so he is not a small dog. It took 3 people to hold him down ...

"Dancing" with my doggie

Anyone know how I can get started with heel work with my dog? Like how it can be done to music? I am training him to be my service dog, and I think this would be great for him and I as a service dog team. Anyone do this with their dog? If so, how did you get started? Any tips?

Service dogs in the UK?

I live in the US. We have service dogs for almost everything now, it is amazing what a dog can do to help and empower a person with a disability. One of the newest being Autism. I am training my own dog to become my service dog, because we still do not have organizations that train dog for adults wi...

SOLID stay/ ignore EVERYONE ELSE. HOW?!

I saw a video on youtube where a service dog was lying next to the owner. A few friends of the owner went about 30 feet away in different directions. The dog was told to stay. Then the friends proceeded to call to the dog, saying "here puppy" making smoochy noises, throwing food/treats at the dog, a...

Re: Service dog task #1, how do I begin?

I have actually thought a lot about doing heel work as they do to music. I think it would be really good for him as a pet and for us as a service dog team. I just have no idea how to begin that training. I live in a small town, so we don't have many trainers around I can consult....

Re: Crate training

Have you tried clicker training? Try shaping the behavior of getting into the crate. Click when he looks at the crate. Then when he gets a bit closer. Then when he goes in with his back feet out. Do all of this gradually at first. Puppies like to try to figure things out. Use a high value reward for...
