Re: Ticks and treatment
The head is beneath the skin surface - you can only grip the abdomen as close to the dog's skin as possible. Most of the time the head comes out, but sometimes it doesn't, and that's no big deal. The skin forms a lump with a scab at the top that contains the tick head. Then the scab sloughs off. Pi...

Re: Can playing ball stress my dog out?
There's a lot of food for thought here, thanks to all for contributing. If we have a naturally excitable breed, then we ideally work hard at giving it work that keeps it calm and focused, such as following scent trails. I was wondering if anyone can explain how exactly scent trails would work? Is th...

Can playing ball stress my dog out?
Hi everyone, WHile I've largely just accepted that sometimes my dog may react aggressively to another dog and try to manage it by keeping away from other dogs, I'm still looking for possible explanations as to what leads him up to that behaviour. Why some dogs and not others? Why not with a particul...

Re: Channel 4 - "Dogs and their secret Lives"
I just liked the way they approached it, by explaining and demonstrating what it's like for the dog, rather than just "Here's the symptom, let's cure that". I think a lot of people don't give a moment's thought to what it's like for a dog living in people world. I would love to see another...

Channel 4 - "Dogs and their secret Lives"
Hey all. Did anyone see this prog on Channel 4 (sorry non-UKers!): http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dogs-their-secret-lives/4od From what I gathered (I had to watch it with the sound down and subtitles because my dog thinks the dogs on the TV are really in the living room), it did a great job of e...

Re: Waking us up early
Lucky you Flossie, what wouldn't I give to be woken at 6:15am rather than 5am when my little rotter wakes up! I'm with GWD - I've decided to look at it as a blessing in disguise. It's been happening since summer started, and while I was like the walking dead for the first few weeks I'm now getting u...

Re: Recall around other dogs
Yep it seems to be something every dog owner goes through. My ginger fuzzball Ruaraidh will come happily trotting back as long as he's not focused on something else - getting his attention involves rustling the bag I keep his ball in, walking away in the other direction (or running noisily), shoutin...

Re: Recall and rewards
The current secret to Breeze's recall is a pouch of awful cheap wet cat food, in a sealed sandwich bag in my pocket  We babysat a kitten (kittensat?) who ate that and he goes nuts for the stuff. It's nice to have a secret weapon! I'm feeling ill at the thought of that, Minkee! I thought liverc...

Re: Bone stuffing ideas
Hey! How great that Murphy is doing well. I'm not sure I would worry about it being a little unhealthy if it's only once a week. If you're balancing his other meals taking this into account and he's getting lots of exercise I would think it won't do too much harm. Certainly less harm than the stress...

Re: Rescue dog, aggressive towards others dogs
hi there, Nothing constructive to add but wanted to let you know that 6 months ago, my dog would have a screaming hairy fit at the sight of another dog 50 yards down the street (same for cyclists, zoomy children, runners, and occasionally cars). I've been following Emmabeth's advice (keep him at a d...

Re: Whole corn cob
It was around 7-8 inches long and from the mess he left I'd say yes he crunched it up!
Thanks for replying so quickly - sitting here worried sick.

Whole corn cob
Hi guys,
Ruaraidh swiped and crunched his way through the leftover cob from my dinner just now. There was very little corn left on it. It had been steamed and then barbecued. Should I be worried?
Cheers
