Re: My dog doesn't like any dog treats.

Good luck. Our dogs salivate when they see us pull out the peanut butter jar. They also like cheese and cantaloupe. Both Beau & Luke are very food motivated and they like dog treats too. I am sure if you follow some of the ideas posted on here you will find what works. Beau loves the sound of th...

Re: How Am I Doing?

You and your Springer are very lucky. Luke is our Springer and he LOVES to play fetch with the tennis ball. We use a launcher and he would play until he dropped if we let him. Beau, our Brittany knows how to pace himself a lot better. Both our dogs pull on the lead. We use Gentle Leaders and those h...

Re: Harness or Collar, you decide.

We use the Gentle Leader when we go for walks. Beau & Luke get excited when they see their leashes because they know they are getting to go someplace special like a hike around the lake.

We remove the gentle leaders when we return home.

Re: Walking replacements?

A massage is a great idea. I wish I had thought of that when Beau was recovering from knee surgery and had to be kept quiet. Beau & Luke love massages, especially Luke!!
Good luck with Dylan's healing process.

Re: Keeping Dogs Cool

Dogs will cool themselves in the way that is best for them if they have the tools. We have a wading pool for our dogs. Beau is a Brittany. When we play fetch he will run with the ball and get in his wading pool and lay down on his belly with just his head sticking up. Luke is an English Springer Spa...

Poor Swinger. He has had a bad run of luck. I am glad you care enough to help him. Good luck with the placement with his new Mom!!

Re: Loose Lead Walking/Clicker vs. Prong Collar

I agree that a prong collar is not the answer. Many years ago we tried one and I hated it because Beau still pulled on it despite the fact that it appeared to hurt. Ditto with choke collar. I understand about getting hurt...I had surgery on my hand in February due to excessive wear and tear on my th...

Re: Urgent help!!!

I hope things go better soon. We have a wonderful Brittany who could have been named "Counter surfer" or "Snoopy." Now we laugh at the stories of food Beau stole in the past (rotisserie chicken, blueberry muffins, sandwiches, loaf of bread, etc.). As you and your sister and grand...

Re: Second dog- how did it change your relationship with Dog#1?

Getting a 2nd dog worked great for us and most importantly, it worked great for both dogs. We decided to get Luke when Beau was a little over a year old so Beau would have a playmate. Beau immediately took Luke "under his wing" and taught him how to be a dog. When we brought Luke home as a...

Re: Is this fear or joy?

Just to support what Emmabeth says about the e-fence: Brittanys and ESS are both hunting breeds, and thus the drive to seek and chase tasty little animals (including the neighborhood cats!) is VERY strong-- so strong, that these dogs are willing to wriggle through the most harsh and unforgiving ter...

Re: Is this fear or joy?

color=#8080FF]Thanks EmmaBeth, If Beau is home and we are away and a storm comes up I would like for him to go in his dog house if outside. That is what Luke does. If we are home when a storm comes up, I would like for him to seek the comfort of his crate. Again, that is what Luke does. I think we c...

Re: Is this fear or joy?

Thanks EmmaBeth, I think we will treat it as fear. Here is Beau's story. When we brought him home at approx 3 months of age (July 2005) we began crate training for night=time and he learned this well. During the day while we were at work he stayed on the closed in porch and later affixed to a tree o...

Is this fear or joy?

Our dog Beau is a Brittany who will soon be 6 years old. When a storm is brewing, he takes off running back and forth across the yard or around the yard. He absolutely flies. Between thunder claps he stops and seems to be watching for the lightning and chasing it. If we do not get him inside before ...
