Re: Crate training - one step forward, two steps back

:D... for me, babying in the context of this thread is nursing the pup to sleep on your knee and picking it up when it whines... your pup is a dog, not a hairy baby! I'm not a great believer in the "nothing in life is free" attitude but it is much better to prevent problems before they sta...

Re: Crate training - one step forward, two steps back

He was woken up a couple of times in the night by noises outside so each time I took him out for a wee the description from your original post is not "whining to get out to the toilet". I doubt that an 8 week old pup has made the connection between whining and toileting in a designated ar...

Re: Crate training - one step forward, two steps back

Hi, I think (from your description) you were doing great but the biggest mistake you made was 'nursing' the pup to sleep on your knee. This is a much more preferable place to be for any dog rather than be in a crate (anyone who has cocker spaniels will agree with this... this is why they are nicknam...

Re: Pup puts on the brakes when walking on leash

Hi Michele... You don't half have a lot of questions for an 'Obedience Trainer'... :P

Anyhoo... Have you tried just leaving the dog alone?

You're welcome Jacksdad...

meant to add... GSD are often more driven by a game of tug than a treat :D

Re: Timid German Shepherd pup--am I training right?

Hi Michelle, I get a regular flow of GSD's through my classes or 1:1 appointments. Many GSD's are naturally untrusting of humans other than their guardian and can be very introverted in situations they find threatening (remember, they are guard dogs so are naturally suspicious anyway). They can even...

Re: Thundershirts

I was going to get one for Dylan just to see if it helped at times of fireworks or thunder for example, but have been to-ing and fro-ing because I cant see how it is really going to help on its own. I had a chat to my veterinary behaviourist about them and he said that some people swear they work, ...

Re: Dog not pooping (too distracted)

Ok... so (without seeing the dog) to me this definitely sounds like a confidence issue so... plenty of excellent advice above :)... Check his diet too but you can help build his confidence by employing plenty of positive training techniques in an environment that sets him up for success. Success bre...

Re: Dog not pooping (too distracted)

Unfortunately he doesn't poop in the house unless we leave the room. He always waits until I go into the bathroom. :P I thought for sure he'd go this morning since it's been over 24 hours, but no such luck (yet). Maybe when my son takes him out (fingers crossed). What do YOU do when he toilets in t...

Re: Dog not pooping (too distracted)

if he's a Scanner he'll constantly look worried and always be scanning the horizon for danger even when there is evidently nothing there... If that's the case then you'll find it very hard to get/maintain a trainable frame of mind (in the dog)... If his radar switches off when indoors then best star...

Re: Dog not pooping (too distracted)

exercise stimulates evacuation :D Can you get him running around/playing? Also... on the rare occasions he's doing it say "toilet" in a cheery voice over and over (as soon as you see him start to stoop)... The association with that cue may help him understand that you want him to 'go' in t...

Get your roomie to give the dog a giant, juicy bone... see how interested he is in where your roomie is going then... :D

Re: 'Fixing' Aggression

I just watched this again and at least at the start of the video I see an aroused dog, but not a scared/out of its depth dog. I see a GSD doing it's 'job' (at least in it's opinion)... As the video progresses I see the dog start to step backwards when the camera man approaches. Then the dog actually...
