Ideas for activity toys--owner with arthritis
My boyfriend's parents have a (rather overweight) 2 year old lab named Cambria who does not get much exercise. IMO they should have opted for a different breed since they are not very active and actually have mobility issues due to rheumatoid arthritis. But they picked a lab and they love her so I'm...

Re: Rehabilitating a Puppy Mill Momma
That is so exciting! How wonderful to give a puppy mill dog a good home even if just until it finds a forever home. My neighbor has a former puppy mill mom and she has a wonderful spirit--you can tell she is happy and grateful to be in a good home and not used as an incubator! I'm rather new to the ...

Re: Stop him nipping me!
Have you tried making a little "erp!" noise when he nips you so that he understands it's hurting you? That's what litter mates do so if your little one was around brothers and sisters long enough, he would understand not to do that (unfortunately my puppy had ONE sibling so the same does n...

Re: Invisible Fence was a bad idea.
My dog has similar fears of baths and cars. Now he's totally fine with baths as we've taught him that he gets a treat when he's calm in the bath and now he associates bath time with good things happening (ie treats). We're working on cars now by trying to distract him from what he's afraid of by squ...

Thanks I will!Nettle wrote:That depends on the puppy's temperament and what exactly is being done. How about starting your own thread with this telling us what is going on, and then see what responses you get.

Re: 2 gates wide open and no dog escapees!
That is really something to be proud and happy about! Our family's second dog (Bob II) was a total homebody and never wandered when we were outside washing cars or doing yardwork but every other dog was a runner--exhausting!

Re: Pack leaders???
Not trying to hijack but I do have a related question. My boyfriend trains our puppy 60% dominance/pack leader training (but not cruel Cesar Millan type) and 40% positive reinforcement but I'm focusing on positive training. It's going really well except I worry that our puppy (GSD) will have issues ...

Re: Opinions on dog crates/cages?
My dog loves his crate and goes in there very willingly when we leave the house. I think he's mostly happy in there because we lined the bottom of it with a sheet my boyfriend used to use and a towel I used to use. That makes him feel extra safe because he associates our smell with protection and co...

That is tragic. My boyfriend's dog was poisoned--presumably so the person could come back and rob the house sans doggie interference. Terrible people are out there...

Re: Terrified Walker
Is your dog maybe afraid of cars? This is actually what I'm struggling with when I take my puppy out for walks. He's fine with our apartment walkway and the sidewalk up to the main road but then we get to the main road and he freaks out. He won't even eat treats because he's so scared!

Re: training the other half!
Eeeeek this is exactly what I'm going through. My bf had a lab that he trained with dominance training and he was "the perfect dog." I'm trying to train our new puppy (a GSD) with positive reinforcement but he's essentially getting that positive things come from me and punishment comes fro...

Re: Changing Foods
Yes...I was just using my case as an example of how it might not cause negative effects to supplement with protein. Obviously the apolosdad should check with a vet who knows his dog's history not just a friend who is a vet. I was not recommending anyone randomly supplement a dog's diet.
