Re: Blind dog now also deaf...please help

Thank you all so much for your prompt and compassionate replies. JudyN, yes we have tried some various scent-based games with her but she seems to get overwhelmed / confused immediately and will literally run int he opposite direct of where the food is. I've tried keeping her on a harness / lead and...

Blind dog now also deaf...please help

Hello lovely people. I am struggling to help my little dog Gypsy (10ish year old Pom / Chi rescue) - my last post here was when she went suddenly blind from SARDS (thread here: http://positively.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=19396&hilit=blind+%2F+deaf#p138800) Very quickly after this she als...

Re: Blind Dog Training

Hello all, thanks so much for your replies and apologies for my tardy response! With a few more weeks under our belt I feel we've got a better sense for how Gypsy is progressing and have had a chance to incorporate some strategies and can report back with our progress. CarolineLovesDogs: thank you s...

Blind Dog Training

Hello again lovely Postively-ers! It's been a while since I've posted, my little Gypsy dog (7-ish year old PomXChi rescue) has been going swimmingly and settled into our family like she was never anywhere else. Our newest challenge is that she has been diagnosed with SARD (sudden acquired retinal de...

Gorgeous greyhound adoption video

hello all! i really wanted to share this lovely video, made by a blogger i follow about the retired racing greyhound, dudley, her family adopted. i know there is a lot of personal preference around adoption/rescue vs. getting a dog from a breeder, but i just thought this video was so lovely it was w...

Re: vacations

i had a horrific experience with a pet sitter the one (ONE!) time i ever left gremlin to go away for three days - every other holiday we've taken her with us, but this one was organised by my parents in law so i had no say over the accommodation so they wouldnt take the dog. i know there are probabl...

Re: Yet another RMB Question

I didn't consult a vet with either Spencer or Rupert. Mostly coz they always recommend crappy foods that are full of corn and wheat and other nasty things and know nothing about feeding raw. same - gremlin had to have her teeth scoured clean and several teeth removed several times, despite being on...

Re: Does this really make a difference?

There is no such thing as pack leadership. Just like the pecking order in birds. Both are caused by human beings wanting to scientifically analyze everything. Humans try way too hard to understand and know everything and when we can’t figure it out, we make something up. Of course we end up paying ...

Re: Started obedience class but don't agree with instructor

I don't have to control every second of my dogs life, I want him to be free to enjoy himself too. ... I'm not sure, but I think you can have a well behaved dog that obeys commands but has some freedoms. I'm new to dogs, so I could be wrong  honestly, with this mindset you can't go too far wron...

Re: 13 Week Old Dog Acts Crazy on leash

i think what emmabeth was saying is, you need to adjust your expectations. this is perfectly normal behavior for a puppy, and he will outgrow it if you deal with the behavior with consistency and patience. you've also only had him for 2(ish?) weeks from 11 to 13 weeks old, you both need time to get ...

Re: Seriously vicious puppy - Breaking skin - I am so desperate!

my take on it is, that dogs managed to evolve pretty successfully for tens of thousands of years before medical vet science figured out neutering - if having their bits was such a very real danger to a dog's health, how are they still so prolific today? it is true that there is a lower incidence of ...

Re: Does anyone rent and have a dog?

echo all of the above - i have rented with my dog(s) for almost 10 years now. a few additional things i did: - apply for appropriate properties. i never bothered applying for 1x bedroom top floor apartment type places because (while i know dogs CAN live happily in these arrangements) i knew that the...

Re: Good vibes needed.

You aren't 'needing therapy' you are 'seeking knowledge'. The more knowledge you gain, the less this whole business will hurt you. Especially with a parent, it gets all mixed up with expectations and fairy tales of how a parent/child relationship should be, but knowledge will help you deal with it ...
