Re: Christmas Day mishap.
The most exciting/stimulating time with guests is when they first arrive. Not exactly the same problem, but I had a dog who peed every single time if she got to greet guests at the door when they arrived. Crate her before they arrived, and then bring her in to meet them after they were settled, and ...

Re: Christmas Day mishap.
He doesn't need to be in his crate when you're gone if he's comfortable, non-destructive, and doesn't get into potentially dangerous things when left alone. If you and he are comfortable with him uncrated when you're gone, there's no reason to change that. Crating is for the dog's safety and comfort...

Re: Christmas Day mishap.
Having friends over without worries is going to depend on training the people as well as working with the dog. Is Duke crate-trained, or does he have some other comfortable place where he can be contained temporarily? If you know someone is coming, put him there before the arrival is imminent, and b...

Re: do spray bottles work
There are other methods to interrupt unwanted behavior that doesn't involve squirting a dog in the face. A loud clapping sound or saying, "Hey" in a loud stern voice will work just as well without water being squirted in their eyes. And for sound-sensitive dogs, that could be far more dis...

Re: do spray bottles work
Eh. Sometimes behavior needs to be interrupted before you can get the dog's attention to achieve different results, and there are plenty (far more than a mere 1 in 10), for whom an occasional squirt from a water bottle is going to be nothing more than a useful and non-distressing interruption. But t...

Re: Three Roomates
Ah, I remember that episode! Definite house-training problems, and despite the fact that it's not the species she normally trains, Victoria did successfully teach basic house manner to the three roommates. One of those girls in particular had a serious attitude problem, and I wouldn't have been surp...

Re: Three pampered pups
There are, as with everything else, appropriate and inappropriate times for clothes. The dog park is not a good place for dog clothes. Also appropriate and inappropriate dogs for clothes. My sister's Lab, with her thick, insulating Lab coat, would not benefit from even the most relentlessly practica...

That's a sewer manhole cover, but it's not a storm drain. This is a storm drain: http://www.photos-public-domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/storm_drain-600x400.jpg Or this: http://www.s1eonline.com/img/stormdrain-main-intro.jpg Or this: http://www.architecture-student.com/wp-content/uploads/2010...

Three pampered pups
I just saw a rerun of this episode yesterday morning, and I was struck again by some things I noticed the first time through. Sisters Heidi and Bridget have three female Maltese. Heidi keeps acquiring dogs with no real sensitivity to her sister's disagreement with this. Bridget, because she didn't w...

When we try to take him for a walk he doesn't want to walk and sudden his tail falls in between his legs. He suddenly loses all motivation and doesn't respond to treats at all. He actually makes my boyfriend carry him! That is a description of a scared dog, not one who thinks he's the boss. He is o...

It's going to take weeks for the cat to adjust to his new home and to the dogs. He may or may not ever be friends with the dogs. He was a stray; just being in a new home is a big adjustment for him, and there's a good chance his previous experiences with dogs have all been bad. Supervise whenever th...

Someone selling puppies of a couple of different breeds at a flea market is a miller, or at best the crappiest kind of backyard breeder, and there's no reason whatsoever to give them the benefit of the doubt. People who care diddly about their animals don't sell them that way. Most small dogs are us...

Depending on the dog and why he's humping things, neutering might help, or it might not, and if that's the only reason you're neutering the dog, you need to be prepared for disappointment. Some friends of mine have a seventeen-year-old cat, neutered at six months per contract with the breeder, and h...

That's great! That's exactly what I was going to suggest, if she was able to go through the night without pottying: Let her cry it out and learn that demanding attention during sleep time Does Not Work. Too often, with the best of intentions, we inadvertently reward exactly the behavior we don't wan...
