Re: Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

OK, that sounds good and doable. :)
In terms of body language when getting her out of the fearful situation, should I walk in front of her or behind her?
Thanks again! :)

Re: Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

That's fair enough. :) I'm actually the blind person, and I find it rather difficult to get her away from my dad if she's growling/barking because she tends to move around a lot, i.e. pace back and forth etc. Therefore, sometimes I have to pick her up, when she stays still, in order to carry her int...

Re: Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

Wow, I didnt' know that. What would you suggest for a blind person who's trying to get her to calm down as quickly as possible so as to prevent the situation from escalating? When she starts up her barking/growling, she's usually not on leash, so I have to pick her up to get her away from the feared...

Re: Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

With that in mind, short of getting the collar, how does one calm a fearful dog down, aside from moving them away from the feared stimulus?
I've heard that picking them up or stroking them only serves to reinforce the fear. Is that true?

Re: Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

Yeah, I figured as much. ;-( I've only got about another month before I leave for school, and that's not nearly enough time. Is it bad if i tell her to "Quiet." when she barks or growls at things in order to keep th situation from escalating? What's a DAP collar? I'll check out those artic...

Re: Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

Bump. Any other suggestions or pieces of advice in terms of easing the tension on both sides? Today, I just did a bit of desensitization with Daisy. I slowly decreased the distance between the both of them while stopping periodically to give Daisy the "Lie Down." command. I then rewarded h...

Re: Fear Aggression

You know, I really empathize with people who have dogs who are fearful of either people or other dogs. It's really hard. The dog doesn't understand English or any other human language. Therefore, you cannot tell the dog to not be afraid of something because of X, Y, or Z. Also, the thing I find hard...

Re: Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

well, at this point, it's hard to say. I think he's mainly reactive now. It's a very emotionally charged issue due to his being so reactive at some times and not during others. That article you posted was very helpful, and it's going to be hard trying to convince them of it. My mom tends to resort t...

Undoing Fear Response (Rather Long)

Hi All, There is a problem in our household currently that we need help with. I'm at college most of the time, so I cannot give you the full picture, but I will put down what I know. We have a one-year-old Bichon Frise by the name of Daisy. We bought her at about eight weeks old from a breeder, and ...

Re: Bichon as Watchdogs?

Oh, I didn't mean to imply she was agressive in any way. She just alerts us when people are at the door.
The bark used is usually short and sharp, but when she sees my dad (I'm saving that for another thread) her bark gets to be somewhere between a howl and an alert bark.

Bichon as Watchdogs?

whenever the doorbell rings, Daisy barks, seeming to alert us that someone's at the door.
Is this behavior typical of a Bichon Frise? Also, in general, what is the bichon temperament like?
This is our family's first dog, well second, but we're very new to raising dogs. :)

OK, if I don't have the conditioner, what can I use instead for the time being? Would something like Vaseline work?
