Re: Knocked 3 year old down
Well, when we were doing the leaving the room thing, it was just whoever the problem was with. So, do you actually say "too much" and then leave the room? What if you tried removing the dog from the room? When our Abby barks at Harper to play, and won't be distracted by a training session ...

Re: Knocked 3 year old down
Keep in mind, the "puppy play mode" doesn't last forever. NO, I am NOT saying to ignore the problem, please don't read that into my words. I'm just saying that the crazy puppy behavior will calm a bit. SO, if you follow Emmabeth and Nightrain's advice, that, in conjunction, with an aging/d...

Re: Puppy
I agree with maximoo. For everyone's sake right now, she would probably do better closer to you. As maximoo said, it doesn't have to be permanent, you can transition her out of your room when things get better. But, hearing you breath, and move in your sleep, that can really be comforting to a new p...

Re: Backyard
How old is he? Do you know anything about his past? My guess would be, without having anymore info, that MAYBE in his previous home his owners didn't HAVE a yard, so he was always walked to go potty. You're doing lots of things right. I would say stick with the leash. Take him out an a leash, pick o...

Re: Re choke collars
Maybe you could put loose lead walking on the list of things you want to work on, that way you could walk the dogs. Not all at once, of course! :D Running and playing in the yard is great fun, but it really isn't sufficient for their exercise needs, no matter how often they are in the yard. Also, wa...

Re: Re choke collars
I'm sorry, as well! You don't need to use those collars! And, that is, in no way, positive training. I don't have any experience with blind dogs, but I will assume (sorry if I'm wrong) that you can do this without a special trainer. Positive training, in this case, would be rewarding for calm behavi...

Re: How do i stop my dog chasing hens?
I agree. When you are there, you can redirect, or supervise, or whatever. But, when you are not right next to her, the prey drive and temptation is too strong.

Re: barking
Hmm. Well, lots of different things to try. For instance, you can have a jar of treats at the gate, or entrance to your yard, and have visitors toss treats to your dog. Actually, if he's running away as they approach, it's good to try to throw the treat a bit beyond him, over his head. Tossing treat...

Re: Barking in Crate During the Day
Usually, when dogs are crated during the day while owners work, they nap, nibble the kong a bit, and nap some more. It's "down time", and they don't have many options. BUT, your dog can hear you, and of course wants to be with you. Anytime you go to her when she's barking or whining, you'r...

[quote=Recognizing and treating my own anxiety was essential in helping Henry with his. Once I was able to be calmer, he could trust me more to keep him safe.[/quote] This was important with Harper and I also. I really was bummed out, and disappointed that I didn't have a "normal" dog. He ...

Re: Positive training vs. phyiscal disciplining
Please forgive me if you think this harsh, but when I read your original post about the things your dogs do and don't do, despite 4 years of training, the first thing that popped into my mind was that the training hadn't been adequate. I don't mean this as a criticism of your training, I just mean, ...

Re: barking
If you could possibly give a bit more information that would help people here give the best possible advice for your situation.... Is the yard fenced? Is your dog leashed when he barks at people? Are you always out with him? Are the strangers just passing by, or coming to visit? Our dogs do a bit of...
