Re: sore belly

There are lots of reasons for itching and scratching. It could be from the clippers but you really have to see if the infection is from yeast or bacteria. The Best way to figure that out is by looking at a sample under the microscope. If it is yeast or bacteria then you can either use topical therap...

Re: canine pacemakers

Actually this is one of those procedures I would do on my pet. It is relatively easy to place and the dogs do really well. Most of the time the dog cannot walk across the floor without passing out so it really comes to choice of put one in or euthanize them. I have had several patients where we plac...

Re: Zippy has collaping trachea..

How are they doing on the antibiotics. Hopefully much improved. If not then I would be concerned this is more allergic then infectious.

Just interested.

Re: Zippy has collaping trachea..

That is really interesting that it seems to location specific. I am wondering if he has a problem with something at your friends house. I had one cat that every time it went to the mountian house he had a huge asthma attack. I also find it interesting that there was vomiting involved. I have had a f...

Re: Swollen Dew Claw

How is he doing. I would have hoped you are seeing some response by now. If not then I would take him back to make sure they do not find something else - like a thorn. I have had a few of these not go down for a week or so. If the dog is licking on it then it will continue to be inflammed longer. It...

Re: Should I be worried?

Most dogs skip meals for two reason: 1. You are feeding too much - easy to fix - cut down the food and treats and they will be waiting for you at the bowl 2. Their stomach is upset. This one can be more difficult and the dogs usually have a history of eating grass, being gassy, on and off loose stoo...

Re: Zippy has collaping trachea..

Collapsing trachea comes in many different degrees. It can be very mild that will get occasionally worse with allergies, infection, or hot weather then totally go away at other times of the year. Some will be very severe and will need surgery - however this is very rare. My bet is that you have a mi...

Re: Fleas?

I would agree that he might be itching just because of allergies and maybe not flea. Location/ pattern of the itching can sometimes give you an indication. Fleas they are usually chewing around the tail head and on their front forearms while airborne seasonal allergy tend to be armpits, and feet lic...

Mattie,

Does it just break your heart to see them in the shelters. We do a lot of rescue work and it is just heartbreaking sometimes.

Re: When to neuter?

Sorry - I missed a couple of days. First let me address the problem between research -(written) and experience. Both are keys to making progress in science. Our experience says - I am seeing a lot this behavior so therefore I want to try to prove my theory. Then as you try to prove your theory you t...

Re: When to neuter?

I want to come live at your place - it sounds great. In your particular case I would have informed you that there is some newer thinking about the orthopedic link and early spay/neuter. Since you seem like a really responsible pet owner, I would leave it up to you if you wanted to do it at 6 months ...

Re: When to neuter?

As with most things there are many different views and opinions on this issue. Much of the basis of our (vets) recommendation about spaying/neutering at 6 months came many many years ago. Our anesthesia was different and our surgical skill was different so we looked for the best time for the dogs to...

Re: When to neuter?

there have been recent studies ( I will look for the articles) that suggest that early neutering/spaying does not allow enough hormone to form that helps growth plates to close. Failure of the growth plates to close causes the dogs to become to tall and therefore put more stress on joints and ligame...

Re: Keflex reaction?

Yes, Keflex (cephalexin ) can cause and upset stomach in some dogs that can start as anorexia and continue as vomiting. I tell owner to stop the meds and give me a call and usually I will change them to a different antibiotic. It happens and usually as soon as you stop giving the drug it goes away. ...

Good - I am glad he is young and hopefully it will be something easy like an infection or even a something stuck up there like a piece of grass. Please keep me informed on how he is doing.
