Re: Terrible teens

In short I am not sure how to deal with this and also I am very much looking for reassurance that this is a phase that he will grow out of / can be trained out of if its done correctly. Any thoughts / ideas gratefully received. do not leave it to chance and the hope "he will grow out of it&quo...

Erica, very sorry to hear about Delta.

And same for Sky, Sirius, and Helen MPBandMom.

May was Jack's 1 year since he passed. His hart condition caught up to him last year, and appears to have thankfully died in his sleep. Miss that little guy.

Re: Anxious collie

So since dogs aren't supposed to be able to generalise behaviour .... Dogs have zero problem generalizing behavior/training. They do it all the time. For example my dog paid no attention to skateboarders zipping until a less than skillful one almost ran us over. Just that one experience changed his...

Re: Anxious collie

I am not a huge fan of leave it for situations like you describe with the cars. I prefer the dog learn to do something on their own in these situations vs having to be told. The reason is skill building vs responding to direction. car moving is exciting or scary or... the or doesn't matter, all that...

Re: dog JUST STARTED being aggressive

I wanted to tag just a little bit to Nettle's suggestion of management vs training. at this age, with health issues either in play or soon to be, it's not avoiding or ignoring the issue. it actually is a valid solution. I have just taken on a client with a similar story and while we will be training...

Re: Baby Miles - encounters, and a scary thought

We both have a strong feeling that Miles would love it. just be REALLY, REALLY honest about this strong feeling...be sure it's NOT your own feeling projected. the more I work with dogs, the more I agree with Nettle about the 2nd dog generally speaking being more about us and not our current dog tru...

Re: Dog Park "Right of Way"

I lean in the direction of if your dog can't be around other dogs without fear, anxiety, or aggression, they shouldn't be in a dog park.

It is possible provide a really good quality of life without the dog park.

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Luckily my friend has an excellent vet who thinks it's obsessive/compulsive behaviour, and he has improved a lot with medication (Prozac I think). Excellent. Are they teaching alternate behaviors? Are they upping the mental work...learn silly tricks, hunt for bit of hidden food etc.? It doesn't see...
