Re: What is your dog NOT good at?
Having nothing to do. Spen has created his own jobs around the house and takes them very seriously indeed. He had 2 weeks of forced rest due to surgery on a paw a few months ago and he was an absolute nightmare. Passing other dogs without a meet and greet. He's getting better, no lunging and screami...

Re: Why do they pile more gear on?
Because it's a lot less effort to keep trying new equipment in the hopes it will be that magic wand you want than to put in the time and effort to train :( And because if you ask for advice online (which let's face it, lots of people do) well meaning average dog owners suggest things like a head col...

Re: Neutered dog is nervous of entire males
Barking is a dogs form of communication though and should not really be stopped. Without a bark or a growl, a dog could bite without warning which could be very dangerous indeed! Maybe we need to walk somewhere where there are multiple ways to go. Our usual walk is a straight trail so no option but...

Re: It's been a while...
He'll be able to confuse all the British dogs with his fluent German   I actually had someone tell me that a certain litter of pups was untrainable because their mother had been imported from Germany while pregnant and so the pups only spoke German. Sometimes you wonder why the amoeba...

Re: It's been a while...
Thanks :D I keep getting asked what breed he is. Then when I say Lab I get "but what's he crossed with?" or told he's not full Lab. And the number of people who've told me Labs are stupid, untrainable/born fully trained (seems to be two distinct factions there), don't need much exercise, s...

Re: Neutered dog is nervous of entire males
I don't see much wrong with him barking at the other dog Except that it can trigger a dog to react in kind which will only reinforce his issues with entire males. So yeah, I would be looking to try and stop his barking, even if it means you have to go out of your way to put more distance between hi...

Re: On Lead & Off Lead dogs meeting for the first time...
My reactions don't seem to affect Spencer much thankfully. After 8 years of Rupert wanting to inflict serious harm on other dogs I was (still am actually) quite tense about strange dogs approaching. Spen is confident enough that he ignores my initial "oh sh*t" reaction and reads the situat...

It's been a while...
Been a while since I was last here so thought I'd say a hello to those who were around when I was posting regularly and give a bit of an update :) At Christmas it'll be 3 years since I lost Rupert Bear. Hard to believe it's been that long already, it seems to have gone so quickly and yet at the same...

Re: Back again
Thanks all. Nettle, I have been cutting sugar in tea down slowly. I've gone from 2 sugars to half but apparently that's not good enough and I got a right telling off  The whole diet thing is so confusing because I've been given no information by doctors and on the internet everyone has their o...

Re: Back again
Hubby's trying to help out but can't really expect him not to have the things he likes just coz I can't have them. Thankfully his big ones are chocolate and ice cream, neither of which I'm a big fan of. Mine tends to be crisps and cake. And yeah, it's awful how sugar just sneaks up on you! Even thin...

Re: Back again
GWD, I have no bloody idea what I'm on, the Germans gave me 2 types of insulin (one fast acting, one slow acting for night) and have been told they'll be changed to the English equivalent. Protophane and ActRapid are what the pens say. At the moment I have flex pens, they're apparently being changed...

Re: Back again
I have no idea MPbandmom, the info I've been given is sketchy at the moment. At one point they weren't sure whether I had Type 1 or Type 2 but they now think it's type 2. It seems they do it a bit differently here though, instead of spending months trying to get your blood sugar under control with d...

Re: Back again
I don't think I could adopt a vegan diet myself to be honest. But I can certainly make changes to my diet. The dieticians attitude really made me just want to come home, eat a truck load of chocolate cake and drink a vat of mountain dew, just as an "up yours!" sort of thing   I ...

Re: Back again
Will have to have a watch of that later Clare :D I've been told next to nothing about diet so far, seeing a dietician but so far all she's done is get hung up on the fact that I said I cannot honestly say that for the rest of my life I will never give in to temptation and have a piece of cake or gla...

Re: Karen Overall's protocols
I've kind of used the protocol for relaxation to help teach Spen self control. It's been absolutely fantastic for doing that and I certainly wouldn't throw the whole idea away because some of what is written is outdated. I sort of adapted it to suit what I wanted though. Rather than Spen simply lyin...
