Re: Problem teaching "Down" command

My older dog just received his CGC without having to go into a down. He'll do a "down" at home, but won't do it on any other surface other than carpet. I video taped this, showed it to the evaluator and explained he has bad arthritis in his hips. It takes a lot out of him to lay down and he typicall...

Re: Crufts 2014

Saw a couple of Dobermans from a breeder in the UK whom I would LOVE to purchase a pup from, but know it'd cost an arm and a leg to get one shipped over here. :(

Re: New Spay and Neuter study

I really need to not read the comments on those articles. I do want to see them do a study on small breeds though, just to shut up the opposition that "well, it could be breed specific" or "it's large breed specific, spay/neuter small breeds at 8 weeks." Both of those comments I have heard when disc...

Re: Petco/Smart Dog Trainers

If someone is hanging outside my ring with a dog, I kindly ask them to move, especially if it's a first level course. These puppies are just learning and can't handle too many distractions just yet. Thankfully, my ring is the converted back receiving area, so not too many folks hang around with dogs...

Re: How do we stop excitable wee?!

I believe the video was not the OP's dog, but I do agree, she doesn't look particularly confident. Also, offtopic, but Teifert1, I hope your dog is a legitimate service dog who performs a task, rather than a dog with a "certification" (of which true service dogs are not required to have and cannot b...

Re: What's your "heart" breed, and when did you fall in love?

I used to be a APBT guy, and still am - I took a break after Rosie's death, but now am working with a pair of working APBTs. 35lb of pure muscle! I still love the breed, the size, easy grooming, the drive (though I could do without the terrier prey drive), and their sheer joy in everything they do. ...

Re: How to keep from spoiling your dog?

to know for sure, we would have to ask him ;) There are lots of reasons that he could be doing this. but the solution would be the same...mostly...regardless of the reason. Just redirect him over to a dog pillow or pile of blankets that are his. don't make a big deal out of it because one of the re...

Re: Martingale?

I use the chain one with my Catahoula and a fabric one with my Doberman. If fitted properly, the chain one is no different than the all-fabric ones. You just have to adjust the sizing and it works the same. The 'Houla sometimes manages to chew through the fabric loop, so he has the chain.

Re: Petco/Smart Dog Trainers

I don't know what the Puppy Play Times are like at Petco, but these are classes that have the potential to cause a lot of problems behaviourally, and in UK vary from the dreadful to the excellent - so again, something to be aware of. This is exactly why I refuse to hold Puppy Play Group in my store...

Re: Petco/Smart Dog Trainers

Mayume, just keep reading and researching and question everything. Most of what I learned, I learned on this very forum and applied it to my classes. There's a sticky list of good books to pick up as well I believe in the training section. Diane, I can bring it up with my DM, but we're quite far awa...

Re: Petco/Smart Dog Trainers

Petco mentor trainer here. :) The current curriculum is written partially by Patricia McConnell and in conjunction with Karen Pryor. Not too much clicker training, but definitely using marker words. I'm happy with my job, though there are many in the company I would NOT recommend. Hell, there are ma...

Re: need help with wolf hybrid

Also, are you sure he's absolutely a wolf hybrid? I know many people who have shepherd crosses or husky crosses that look "wolfish" (like Tamaskans, for example) and insist they're hybrids when they're not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't vinegar ENCOURAGE dogs to go in that area? I would be looking for an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle.

Re: Incident with Pitmix and 2yr old son - HELP!

Alphas *cough, cough* I mean leaders eat first. This is also incorrect. Puppies get first meals. :D Please, do read up on the new research. Victoria Stilwell has also since changed her views on "alpha" and leadership from her UK series. If I tried that "leadership exercise" with the food with my re...
