Re: aggresive/resource guarding?

A really good book for a complete protocol for dealing with resource guarding is "Mine" by Jean Donaldson. As it will give you a more complete picture, and way of dealing with it than internet advice, I'd really try to get it. Your local library might have it. But it is an inexpensive litt...

Re: Transitioning from Traditional to Positive Training

I tried calling her but she continued to sniff. I repeated the cue but she wasn't listening. I brought out her leash (which she usually always comes to) but no avail. I brought out a towel since her coat and feet were now soaked but no avail. Finally, I decided to ignore her and eventually she pawed...

Re: my dog wont eat dog food

There's a good book by Monica Segal (sp?) called K9 Kitchen which has useful advice about balanced home-made diets for dogs. However, if you'd like your dog to eat what you feed her, here's an excellent article http://dragonflyllama.com/%20DOGS/Writing/TeachEat.html Getting in a struggle with a dog ...

Re: Calming Cap

Hmm never thought of it that way...I often have to try and move Leo away from the other dog as he gets quite aggressive so I pull him away and stand in his way, but often have to cover his eyes until the other dog passes...he hasnt always been this way and it is so frustrating that he used to be fi...

Re: Transitioning from Traditional to Positive Training

Oh. . . and any cues you have poisoned, rename the behavior as something else (here instead of come, park instead of sit, etc.) but don't put a name on it until the behavior is pretty much exactly what you want. If you "name" a sloppy behavior, a sloppy behavior is what you will get.

Re: Transitioning from Traditional to Positive Training

Good for you! Understand that the change in thought process is going to be radical for both you and the dogs. "The Thinking Dog" by Gail Fisher may be a useful read for you. In my experience, many crossover dogs have a difficult time mustering the confidence to try new things, because in t...

Re: Calming Cap

I would be so temped to try this for Leo...he gets so worked up over meeting other dogs. Ive just watched a couple of episodes of its me or the dog and am religiously trying them out! The only problem I do have is there isnt any places for me to go with Leo to introduce him to dogs. The only place ...

Re: First Time Killing A Cat

Well, dogs (and particularly hounds) hunt. That's what they do. Most of the literature I've seen on Elkie state that they are likely to not be good with cats. That has nothing to do with how they relate to humans or any kind of human aggression. My dogs (who are not hounds) have 86ed a few cottontai...

Re: Help! He's scared of me now!

I'm wondering if your body chemistry is "off" since the seizure. I might be tempted to douse myself in lavender or peppermint, and maybe put some (or DAP) on his collar or a bandana so you are drowning out other scents. Just a theory, might be worth a try

Re: Crate problems

Breed, sex and age? One thing I'd be checking out (especially if this is a new behavior) would be to make sure you don't have a urinary tract infection going on, or another physical problem.

Re: Jealous or territorial??

What an ADORABLE dog! He looks like he's pretty small. A lot of times little dogs feel like they have to put on a big show, to keep potentially scary dogs away. Let's say, instead of saying that I like all teenagers, it would be more accurate to say I like polite teenagers who are friendly and appro...

Re: Nervous dog

A lot of male dogs mark. (Is he intact?) I teach my dog to eliminate on cue when we are out and about, which prevents marking in the neighbor's prized azaleas, on car tires, and other places it would be rude to allow my dog to lift his leg. It's likely that all this has to do with the insecurity, r...

Re: rabbit killer

Some dogs do mistake fast moving little dogs for prey. Many do not. My dogs are good with the inside cats, but I think if those cats were in the yard, some of my dogs would chase them, and might harm them before they realize what they are. I had one dog who would carefully herd escape cats back to t...

Re: Chewing through harness

I'd take the harness off except when you are walking him. They do make some harnesses for small dogs which are close fitting fabric and almost like a shirt. That might be more comfortable for him, and also harder to chew on. Several things you can do for better loose leash walking. First thing I wou...
