Re: Fish Oil--Cod Liver in Particular

Thank you, all, for the feedback. And Nettle, I'm glad to know I have not been poisoning my dear Emma!

Fish Oil--Cod Liver in Particular

Hi all, I have been feeding my dog, Emma, cod liver oil for a couple years now, after a vet recommended I start her on fish oil for arthritis in her knees. She gets about a tsp a day, either in gel tablets or as straight liquid from the bottle. However, I recently heard that cod liver oil can have v...

Re: Bones to clean canine teeth

Chay,

Yes, thank you, that is Emmy. She's an almost 50 Ibs Samoyed.

Great idea. I will try to procure some inexpensive lamb riblets and see how those work. I probably should feed her a little more lamb anyway!

Re: Bones to clean canine teeth

Thanks, Nettle, I will try Aloe Vera! I'll try giving her more slabs of meat too. Yes, raw chicken bones (like chicken wings, chicken backs) are perfectly fine for dogs to eat, and they have worked wonders to clean Emmy's teeth (well, except the top of her canines). Recently, I even suggested to a d...

Bones to clean canine teeth

Greetings, I have been feeding my dog mostly raw food for her meals, including RMBs in the morning (mainly chicken bones and sometimes beef necks). Her teeth are now shiny white. Gone is the little bit of plaque that was beginning to build up on her back "molars" (or whatever they are call...

Re: Should I be concerned?

Could he have a little bit of arthritis in his joints? My dog is not yet three and has arthritis in her left front elbow. The joint in that leg didn't grow together properly. So it is possible for a young dog to have arthritis, and stiffness after naps is one common symptom. It is possible that, for...

Re: Nutritional Needs of Puppies

Merrick is a quality brand. I have fed Emmy both "Puppy Plate," which is higher in protein than most of their other blends, but does contain some grains, and their "Before Grain" blends, which are grain free. Wellness is also a high quality kibble and now widely available at stor...

Knuckle and Marrow Recreational Bones

Greetings. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on raw knuckle and marrow beef bones. I've heard that they can chip a dog's teeth. I have given Emmy marrow bones to chew on before without any problem, but I don't want to continue to give her these if they could chip a tooth. And if you don't conside...

Re: dehydrated

Have you thought about home-preparing some of her food? I've been feeding Emmy more home-prepared meals and have noticed that she drinks much less water than she did before. I always added water to her kibble, but she still drank a lot. Now I see her going to her water bowl only a couple times a day...

Re: dog food?

Yes, good idea...and don't be afraid to add veggies and fruits. Emmy loves apples and carrots...also pumpkin and plain yogurt.

Re: dog food?

You might look into Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul or grain free Taste of the Wild--both manufactured by Diamond. I wouldn't say they are the very best, but good, especially for the price. I would personally stay away from the very fishy blend of the Taste of the Wild because last I checked, ...

Re: Food

You can always order Acana or Orijen (and any number of other foods online). Try, for example, Petfooddirect.com. The prices (minus the potential shipping amount) are pretty comparable to what I pay at the local pet food boutique where I buy Emmy's Acana. I do feed Emmy Acana. I have tried her on ot...

Re: Parvovirus/Vaccination

I fostered a puppy who was recovering from Parvovirus a couple years ago. So I did quite a bit of research and talked at length with my vets at the time. Parvo is mostly found in puppies who have not developed immunities (mainly through vaccination) and, less often, in older dogs with weakened immun...

Re: Shock Collar

Yeah, I don't like the choke chain either. When I was growing up, my family owned a 100+ pound Kuvasz who never really learned how to leash walk (she died young of disease :( ). Not knowing any better, we walked her on a choke chain and I just recall that she still pulled quite heavily, yet you coul...

Re: Calling all Husky owners

Another thing you might look into when your husky is a little older is local sled dog groups/clubs. I was down visiting my in-law in Tennessee and a husky rescue/sled group was promoting an upcoming reenactment of the 1925 diphtheria serum run. They also invited any sled dog breed to participate in ...
