Hi fundog, I know exactly what you mean about the 'fist canister' I have done the same thing with him, cos it keeps him amused for hours ;) I don't know whether trying to shove something into his mouth as you describe would work or not ... most of the treats are pretty small as he's already carrying...

HI Emmabeth, Yeah it was a strange response (from the Lab) as he barely notices anything going on other than food. I guess the whole flying through the air thing is a bit on the weird side :-) The bizarre thing was he didn't mind when my partner had a swing. I thought it might be worth experimenting...

Hi Nettle, Thanks for the reply. They are a lovely breed and it's wonderful to have a big dog in the house again. He reminds me so much of my old dog whom I never got to see grow old :( They have a lot of similar traits. I'd like to be able to feed him normally from my fingers without drowning in sl...

Thank you guys for teaching me the techniques to help her. I am amazed at how well they work (although unfortunately I've not persuaded my partner so there could be better consistency with them) and stunned at the reading I've done since about how old the methods I've always been taught to use are. ...

Post Script

By the way, I've done a search and read this post: http://www.victoriastilwell.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4006&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight= Heavy mouthing and biting: how to approach the problem But I feel it's a rather different issue, due to his age and probably dete...

Elderly Dog Too Rough When Taking Food

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding this problem: We are dogsitting a 14 year old Labrador for 6 months, while his owner is overseas. He's a beautiful dog, lovely nature, though I suspect he's not had a great deal of training. On the advice of people on this forum regarding anothe...

An update

Hello everyone, I know it's a long time since I last visited, but I thought I would give anyone who's still interested an update. Gemma is doing a bit better in some respects, though it's very much up and down. We have had a 14 year old labrador move in for 6 months and they get along quite well. He...

More Good News (I think)

I think there's something else positive about Gemma's behaviour that I only just realised. Before, she was so desperate for attention that she would follow you around all day, practically begging for pats (strokes) or attention of any form and if you allowed her onto you lap she would not get off vo...

Thank you

Thanks guys ... just when I thought it was all hopeless :) I guess maybe positive things are happening, even if it doesn't seem like it at times. She's still incredibly fidgety and can't focus to do any training at all ... she won't even sit. She's a totally different dog to the one who would do com...

A Happy Update at Last

Hi folks, I finally have a happy update to give you all. 1. Gemma has started pushing her head into my hand quite hard to enjoy a better ear scratch rather than being skittish and only liking a very gentle touch 2. I finally braved the outdoors again today after us all having been cooped up for prob...

Actually I also put a few drops of lavender essential oil on my pillow (before I put the pillow case on) each week when I change the sheets, to help me sleep, cos I've been having trouble nodding off. The cat sleeps on a pillow in between my partners and my pillow and I've also got a spritz bottle w...

Lavender Essential Oil

Hi Wolfgal, I didn't realise you were in Aus! It's been torrential hasn't it?? At least we aren't suffering through the fires like those poor Victorians. You can use lavender in a lot of ways: * Add it to your washing machine's rinse cycle for clothes, bedding, pet bedding etc. * Put 10 drops in a 5...

I've been using lavender and various other essential oils, diluted in an atomiser as air freshener for years ... so she's probably used to the house smelling very un-dog like, but you are right, pennyroyal does have a very strong odour ... pepperminty. I don't actually practise anymore in health ......

Fundog, I believe Pennyroyal is poisonous if ingested in largish quantities (1 teaspoon or more for a human) - it's hepatotoxic, kills the liver. It can cause abortion in women even through topical application (allegedly) but I don't think a room spray/carpet spray with Pennyroyal and Lavender would...

Update

Hi ladies, Well ... it's been raining cats and dogs here, for about a week now, so the walking hasn't been happening and I haven't had the carpets cleaned, cos they wouldn't have dried in a million years. I haven't even ventured out to the supermarket to get garlic, it's been that wet!! I have not b...
