The Harness is half on

Toby has a collar for his tags, but I'd rather use a harness for walks because he will sometimes just stop and I have to tug the leash to get him to walk again. I don't want to injure his neck, and I don't want the collar accidentally coming off. So, he hates the harness. I'm not sure why, maybe it'...

Hostile about treats

Maybe this belongs in Diet, but I'm trying here first. My 3 YO peke, Toby, has started doing something that was cute the first time, but now it's worrying me. And, yes, I was feeding him something I wasn't supposed to, but I very rarely do that and it's a treat when I do. However..... I brought home...

We had a german shepherd mix that did this. He got hit by a car and it dislocated his hip. After surgery, he was showered with attention by everyone and pampered. As he got better, the attention tapered. Then, our other dog hurt his foot and started getting the attention. Suddenly, the first dog was...

Wow, right after I read your answer, Toby found something he loves, and it's not even a dog toy. It's a CAT toy. I buy fuzzy mice for the cats for like $1 each - really small ones. He went nuts. I can throw it for him and he literally bounces across the room and back with it. He skids into anything ...

I still have not worked up my courage to bathe him. He's much much improved on temperment, but he's still snappy at times, and he's lightning quick. Thanks for the suggestion on the slicker brush. He still does NOT like it, but we're working on it. I did give in today and bought a 2-sided brush with...

How to find toys they will play with

If you have a dog that likes toys, how do you find new toys for her to play with? And how long do you give them to get interested in a toy before you give up and discard it? OK, those sound like dumb questions, but what I'm getting at is this: I've got sugar gliders and cats along with the recent re...

Fox on a Stick

I was in PetsMart this weekend, and for $25, they have what looks like a fox pelt, but it's plush with stuffed head and feet. It's about 2-3 feet long with the tail and could probably be attched to a stick quite easily.

Thanks, both of you. He is adorable, and I'm already in love with him. I got home the other day and could not find him. I was panicking and yelling for him when he very calmly walked in from the garage and looked at me like I was nuts. I leave the door cracked for the cats, and he had not previously...

Hello!

I just would not stay in the kitchen. I'd help wash up later, but every time Mama would call me in there, I'd stay a few minutes and then wander out and find a book to read. Finally, she just gave up. I know the basics, but that's it.

Hello!

My name is Mamie and I have lived in Fort Worth, Texas, for the last 8 years. Before that, I lived in southwest Mississippi. I still have family there, and they have my 2 10-yo yorkie-peke mixes, 12-yo border collie. My 3 torties are also there. I attempted to bring the YP mixes and one tortie with ...

Grooming shelter dog while he's still adjusting to new home

I recently adopted a 3 yo peke from a shelter, and while he's making loads of progress in settling down, he still has a ways to go. I've been bitten numerous times in the last 2 weeks. My problem right now is how do I groom him in between taking him to a professional groomer? I simply can't afford w...

Adopted 3yo Peke with an Attitude

Thanks for all the suggestions. He's doing much better already. I did discover one thing that should have been obvious, but wasn't. One major trigger is a taller, larger person bending down sticking out a hand to his face to pet him. I laid down on the floor next to him, and he let me pet him for ma...

Adopted 3yo Peke with an Attitude

In a nutshell: Grown intact male peke with aggression issues. Owner never had to actually train a dog on the basics. What do I do????? The long version: This past week, I adopted a 3 or 4 yo male peke from a shelter. I know there is a settling-in adjustment period, but we are not doing so well. I am...
