Re: Behaviorist v. trainer?

Thanks Ari for underscoring that I am playing with fire and to be very very careful. I will be vigilant in keeping them separated, and thankfully I have found a responsible pet sitter who is also very keyed in on the need to keep them apart, so I can leave on business trips with peace of mind. I'm s...

Re: Behaviorist v. trainer?

Jacksdad: The link that the non-certified behaviorist sent me was to the APTD website, so she is on the same page as you. I hadn't heard of that organization before and so couldn't judge anything by it, especially since the website said that trainers listed weren't being recommended and individuals ...

Re: Behaviorist v. trainer?

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I need to do more research on the people around here who hang out their shingles. First, I live in Virginia, USA, so I can't take advantage of that UK link, nor is there a Victoria Stilwell certified trainer within striking distance. There is a vet two hours away wh...

Behaviorist v. trainer?

I have 3 dogs, all female, all spayed. all mixed breeds, all about 45 pounds though different shapes! A year ago I brought home the last dog whom I found on the side of the road. I posted ads, checked with animal control several times, no one claimed her. I kept her. She is a lovely dog (named Jez) ...

Re: Dog attacks dog: Prevention?

Thanks for your thoughts. The elderly dog did get a check up in April and except for a Lyme positive test was deemed in good health. She is beginning to get arthritic in one leg (I don't think it's related to the Lyme positive status, at least the stiffness didn't change at all after antibiotic trea...

Dog attacks dog: Prevention?

I have a senior dog who has been attacked several times by a stray I picked up from the side of the road. All are females. The stray is about 3 years old. The attacks seem to happen when the stray is next to me and the senior dog trots up to see me. Then the stray attacks and the senior attacks back...

Protection from ticks/fleas

My dog has been on Frontline Plus for years, and was just diagnosed through her annual blood test as having been exposed to Lyme Disease. She is now taking the usual round of antibiotics, and hopefully this will help clear up her stiff shoulder problem that recently developed. (We live on the East C...

Re-homing a stray dog

I need to find a new home for a dog I picked up on the side of a busy road back in June. In many ways she's a cool dog but the bottom line is that she hates my senior dog (gets along okay with my other dog) and that is causing too much stress in the household. I have contacted various rescue groups ...

Re: Re-homing aggressive dog

Thanks for the advice. I had actually seen the story about giving treats while the two dogs are together but separated. Unfortunately I read it after I broke up a huge fight and got bit bad and don't have full use of my arm for awhile. So I am separating the two dogs all the time and will follow the...

Re-homing aggressive dog

I have read some posts on the website aggressive dogs. Still, I am looking for further advice. I have two dogs: 13 year old border collie mix, and 5 year old beagle/basset. A few weeks ago I picked up a stray dog on the side of a busy road (no one has claimed her despite ads in local media). She is ...

Re: 'Aggression' - some things to think about.

I have read this post and also the post on bringing a new dog home who is aggressive to the original dog. Still, I am looking for further advice. I have two dogs: 13 year old border collie mix, and 5 year old beagle/basset. A few weeks ago I picked up a stray dog on the side of a busy road (no one h...

Puppy aggression

Mattie, If you have further suggestions on how to stop the aggression, please share! Again, I try to prevent the aggression by nipping it in the bud. Example: If the puppy is on the communal bed first and the adult wants to go near it, I tell the puppy to get off the bed, and then invite the adult o...

puppy aggression

Thanks for the tip about the adult dog's health, I had not thought about that. Will continue to try to prevent outbreaks and patiently wait for the puppy to outgrow the hooligan stage.
