Re: Tips for positive socialization while on walks

Thank you for the response, Shalista. :) The end goal I have in mind is simply to try to socialize Melian in a way that she'll grow up to be a confident, happy dog that hopefully will at least be comfortable around other people and dogs. Whether she wants to approach them or not is up to her, I just...

Tips for positive socialization while on walks

Just as the subject line says, I am wondering if you all would have tips for positive socialization while taking my 6-month-old lab/hound puppy on walks. My family is very laid back, not to mention we live in a rural area, so taking Melian on an official WALK at a park is kind of a big event that in...

Re: Lab puppy sometimes jumps/nips while playing outside

Thank you, Judy. It makes me feel a lot better to know you had success with the ignoring method. My mom and I both like the idea of carrying something like a watering can to help block her, too. We'll do our best to be consistent and patient! I'll definitely look up that "It's Yer Choice" ...

Re: Lab puppy sometimes jumps/nips while playing outside

I haven't got the time to reply properly right now, but could you give a link to the thread(s) you've read about this problem? I expect it was me who gave the advice there, and I don't want to repeat myself and suggest things you've already tried. I did a search, but am having trouble finding the s...

Lab puppy sometimes jumps/nips while playing outside

This about my almost 6 month old lab/hound mix puppy Melian. I am wondering what to do about her unfortunate tendency to VERY INSISTENTLY jump and nip sometimes when I and/or my mom play with her outside. She has done this pretty much since she got big enough to do it...the first record I have of it...

Re: Lab puppy guards kibble from beagle

also idk if anyone has stated this but i was always taught to bless the growl. growl is talking. growl is saying this is not cool. much preferable to snapping or biting to say what he wants. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for sharing. @Nettle: I agree. Better safe than sorry, so no more edibl...

Re: Lab puppy guards kibble from beagle

I'm glad you agree that they are getting along well, and it is hilarious to watch them play, especially when they decide to run laps around the couch. XD I can be such a worrier at times, it gets rather silly, so it's always good to hear other perspectives besides that worry voice. Thank you. :) The...

Re: Lab puppy guards kibble from beagle

Thank you, Judy. I appreciate the understanding. :) While we're still on the subject of resource guarding, do you all have any advice for what to do if Melian ever becomes defensive with Eli over something other than kibble? Like, say, a chewy bone? Generally speaking, chewy bones have been one of t...

Re: Lab puppy guards kibble from beagle

Thank you for the reply, Jacksdad. Just to clarify, when I said I've picked up her food bowl when she was eating, it was just one time when I wasn't thinking and the bowl was about to slide up under the edge of the cabinet, so I moved it while her nose was still in the bowl. I don't make a habit of ...

Lab puppy guards kibble from beagle

Hi. My name is Elizabeth, I'm new to the forums and haven't posted before and was just wondering if I should be concerned about this and, if so, what to do? My lab mix puppy (the vet thinks she's maybe a lab x hound mix but we don't know for sure), Melian, is 5 months old and my parents and I adopte...
