Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Again, thanks for the advice. It's quite possible we were trying to move too quickly with Ziggy because things seemed to be going so well. We'd certainly relaxed the 5 second rule, so we'll go back to that and try to watch for the signals that Ziggy is getting overwhelmed. Since he became a bit more...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks for this advice, JoanneF and Lotsaquestions. I'll certainly try these grooming tips. I have been working on getting Ziggy used to the scissors, and we seem to be making good progress, so I'll try the same process with the baby bath. I'll also try the food on the fridge trick! I'm feeling a bi...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks, Nettle. Great advice. I'll give it a try - Ziggy seems much more trusting of us now (makes sense - he had no idea who were were or what our intentions were at first!), so hopefully if we do this very slowly we'll be able to get him used to the scissors before we actually need to trim him.

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks for all this, and sorry I haven't checked in to get everyone's replies for a while. More internet issues - the joys of moving out of the suburbs! I've bought a rather large baby bath, and will try to introduce Ziggy to this very slowly, as I think we'll EVENTUALLY have to bath him, but the dr...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks, Shalista. I'm going to leave it as long as I can - for everyone's sake! As Ziggy is so small, I'm thinking of getting a plastic baby bath as that might be less scary than the actual bath...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Happy to report Ziggy seems to be happier day by day, although we still have our ups and downs. Discovered last night that he's not a huge sports fan - we were watching our football team have an unexpected win, and apparently making a fair bit of sudden noise, and every time something happened and w...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Absolutely! He's very keen to jump up onto our laps now, but I think it freaks him out a bit once he gets up there, which is completely understandable. We've all had a great day today, but I think he's overdone the socialising a bit as he's squeezed himself under the coffee table again tonight! Stil...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks again, everyone, for the replies and advice. Sorry I haven't replied to all of the comments individually - we have limited internet access at the moment and have just had a 2-day outage! Ziggy is doing so well, and seems to be much more relaxed most of the time. I think he's starting to trust...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Ziggy update - and, inevitably, a few more questions... We've now had Ziggy just over 2 weeks, and he's becoming a very affectionate little pup and seems WAY more relaxed most of the time. From what I'm reading here about the time it often takes for rescue dogs to adapt to a new environment, I feel ...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks, Nettle. Had a lovely day with Ziggy yesterday, and feel like we're making progress and getting to understand what he wants us to do/not do. Only a couple of growls all day, so hopefully we're coming to understand each other more. Took Ziggy for quite a long walk in the afternoon, and discove...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Yes, sounds like Bax has come ahead in leaps and bounds :D And I'm sure Ziggy will too, given time. One great thing we discovered today is that he's fine being left at home alone. We hadn't planned to leave him alone so soon, and I was pretty anxious myself when we all had to be out at the same time...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks, Nettle and Shalista for your advice. I've read some of your posts about Bax, Shalista, and the progress he's made, so I'm very hopeful that we'll able to create a safe place for Ziggy. His constipation seems to be resolving itself with time and the medication, which is a great relief. Althou...

Re: Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Thanks so much for this advice, Lotsaquestions. It makes sense, and I'll give it a try. The '5 second rule' sounds like a good idea because I don't think we're very good at reading Ziggy's signals yet so it's probably good to let him ask for more rather than us overdoing it. His bed is a small round...

Seeking advice: very anxious small rescue dog

Hi. I was searching online for any advice that might help us settle in our little adopted dog Ziggy (7 year-old male silky terrier/papillon cross) and came across your forum, and have already found the posts on other queries very helpful. But I do have a few questions of my own - some of these have ...
