Re: dose anyone else volenteer for a rescue a love it
I volunteer at our local shelter working with dogs that have behavior challenges. Its extremely rewarding, especially when they go to a forever home.

Re: Dog that jump on people
Hi Spike, When your dog greets you from being away, does he greet you with 4 on the floor or do you allow a jumping greeting because you like it? Second what type of dog do you have size wise....toy, small, medium large, Xlarge. Often times smaller breed jump because the world looks down at them and...

Clear the Shelter
I have to say that the shelter I work with we had outstanding results finding homes for 30 of our 70 adoptable animals. Many of the dogs I have been working with and rehabilitating went to what we hope are their forever homes. Overall across the participating shelters in our area 700+ animals found ...

Re: Prey Drive Question
Chasing chickens or chasing rabbits it all seems to be the same as mentioned. What I found that worked with Khan on not chasing rabbits (when we are engaged in things like agility or flyball) was using the rabbits and the chase as a reward rather than using a short lead. I found with my dog no matte...

Re: ADs on Facebook
My guess on this would be the owner had an invisible fence. By using electric shocks the device is supposed to keep a dog contained to a specified area. Of course if one get out, it will also refuse to re-enter the area to avoid the shock threshold. Cruel all around IMO, plus it does nothing to keep...

ADs on Facebook
OK so while perusing my facebook, I see this video of dog training with a happy look dog doing all sorts of nice tricks at a local dog park. The problem of course was the shocking collar deice worn by the dog. So of course I tell facebook I never want to see ads from this company again. For the reas...

Re: advice please my husband wont listern to me regarding breed
I think I will take a slightly different tack than everyone else. I would visit your local shelter and meet the dogs there of all ages and breed types. Read their descriptions and talk to local shelter personnel from the adoption councilors to behavior consultants/trainers they may employ. If you do...

Re: for or against shock collar
There are 4 quadrants of learning. Positive reinforcement is only one of those quadrant and the others are equally valid methods of learning. Can a dog be trained with a shock collar....yes it can, my question is does it have to be. Is there a reason one must inflict pain and discomfort to identify ...

Dog Soiling furniture and things Chloe taught me
How much I miss her cannot be expressed in words. The thread about furniture soiling reminded me of some of the funnier aspects of Chloe's last year. As her disease progressed it became harder and harder to control her bowel movements. She was always great about letting you know she needed to go. If...

Re: Dog soiling furniture
Part of the problem I suspect is cleaning up. urine especially will soak deeply within things like cushions and pillows, and as dogs smell where the bathroom is and are 1000s of times more sensitive to our sense of smell...we may think its clean, but its not. As she has done it frequently it has als...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Getting ready for a weeks long vacation to a national park means spending lots of good quality time with the boys. Each night we have been taking sunset strolls at our favorite beach and tomorrow they will enjoy Tuna Kongs. Next week they will be at ranch camp, chasing rabbits and gophers and having...

Re: Vent!
A few weeks ago I was in a huge argument with a non positive reinforcement based trainer who insisted that certain names collars (you can guess) are not painful when used properly. I am just so sick of these idiots. He complains that positive training requires to carry food around constantly and of ...

Re: Potty accident!
You know the rule about potty accidents.
1. Grab a magazine or newspaper
2. Roll above in a tight club like shake
3. Beat self about head which chanting. I need to watch the dog.
4. Repeat step for until the message sticks
On a serious note, yeah don't make a big deal, but do clean it thoroughly.

Re: New dog reactive, clingy, anxious when alone
Interestingly enough I have to say yes on this. My previous therapy dog Chloe would have some anxiety issues with our neighbors screaming children...they would scream for hours at a time. and she would pace and whine and bark incessantly. We found by putting on music...and, I kid you not, Bob Marley...

Re: New dog reactive, clingy, anxious when alone
I think you are expect far too much in far too short a time. Fear issues can take months or even years. Dogs of this type are a lifetime commitment and progress and seem extremely slow to perhaps non existent...then one day in the distant future. Suddenly you notice a huge improvements. When I began...
