Help with potty training!

Hi everyone. I'm a new foster coordinator for a rescue and need some advice for one of my foster homes. Minnie is an approximately 12-year-old dachshund mix who was picked up as a stray and rescued by my group. As far as I know, she seemed to do fine at our facility as far as not having accidents in...

Re: New foster "nipping" my face

Thanks for the replies. Emma, because they are so small I like to sit on the floor to interact with them. They'll crawl on my lap and then the boy tries to get up into my face. What I've been doing is if he sits nicely I pet him. If he tries to even reach up for a lick I turn my head and put him bac...

Re: Crate crying

Couple of things that worked with my greyhound that I was advised from others: I fed him meals in there, gave treats only in the crate, and gave kongs only in the crate. He soon learned good things happen in the crate. I made sure to put him in the crate WHILE I was home. Otherwise, he was learning ...

New foster "nipping" my face

I just picked up two 10-year-old doxies to foster. They were left at a shelter with a note that said "Don't want anymore!" Ugh!!!! Anyway, they are sweet as pie but the boy has a bad habit of trying to "nip" my face/nose. He has great inhibition and I can tell he's just excited t...

Re: Dissapointed in 4th US season

I was just mentioning to my husband how this show has lost interest for me. Focus on the people way too much. As soon as AP's motto went to Surprisingly Human, I knew this network was going downhill. Just look at all the shows they have now. My husband put one on (can't remember the name...something...

Re: IMOTD - lack of love from AP

OMG, you can tell AP (Surpringly Human) has ruined IMOTD. I've only watched the first 2 episodes so far (3rd one is on DVR...hope it's better) and was completely disappointed. I actually fast-forwarded through much of the Castle episode...very little information/dog training, etc. Lots of photo shoo...

Re: Insecure rescue dog

Well, I had to tell my group I couldn't continue to foster this dog anymore. He nipped at my husband twice since my original post. My family was walking around on egg shells and my dogs did all they could to avoid this dog. I couldn't even crate or pen him because he would bark incessantly. I draw t...

Insecure rescue dog

I need some advice. I've been doing dachshund rescue for 3 years and am on my 17th foster. I'm stumped how to handle this guy. I received a 5-year-old mini doxie yesterday who was an owner surrender. This is one insecure dog who I don't believe has been socialized to people or dogs. This dog has bee...

Re: May 1st episode - Odom Family

One would hope that breeders of such dogs as the Presa Canario would want to educate those purchasing their puppies. Obviously this is not the case. A google search of this breed gives a lot of information for them. The wife in this episode didn't seem to realize how big these dogs get. Really? I al...

Ok, so I just saw your post saying they are being fostered with another friendly dog. Hope it works. Somehow I missed your last post.

Re: Terrified adult pekignese from puppy mill

Are they able to be fostered with someone who has a well-adjusted dog? As they are comfortable around other dogs, I would think even watching a well-adjusted dog interact with its owner might be a positive experience for them. Although I've never had a case this severe, most of my foster dogs defini...

Re: puppy issues?

Great idea! Maybe she could focus on one family's pup from the time they get it through six months, focusing on problems most puppy owners face (the reason I only adopt adult dogs from now on :) A preventive dog training show...I love it.

Yep! That sure is what happened. And if I put my leg down too much, they would walk over it to get the treat.

Re: Getting Boxer Pup to lay down?

I tried the lure method and going under the leg method with all my foster dachshunds and it would never work. Not sure if it's their body style, short legs, or whatever. Best method I came up with is to simply wait for the behavior. I don't use a clicker but the word yes. I would patiently wait unti...
