Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2
Me and my dog haven't done much today, or much for the last few days, or weeks. I've suddenly realised that Merlin might have... Dare I say it... Grown up! He's still Mr Playful and enjoys his long morning walks, but in the house he's now happy to relax and chill when I'm busy writing / job hunting...

Re: How unhealthy are Bernese mountain dogs?
The owners they spoke too said that Berneses go to the vets far more than most other breeds.
Yes they will be taking there dog to a vet but they don't want a breed that goes more than most.

Re: Let's talk sighthounds
I ws also thinking this morning that training is a bit like sculpture. A lump of marble and a lump of clay can both be sculpted into something beautiful, but if you try to use a chisel on soft clay or mould marble with your hands, you're not going to get great results  Yes like nettle says be...

Re: How unhealthy are Bernese mountain dogs?
Depends what you mean by "healthy". It might be possible to find some that are less unhealthy than others, but it would not be possible to find one with an average-for-a-dog lifespan and free from inheritable illnesses. There fine with short lifespan, by healthy I mean one that won't be g...

Re: How unhealthy are Bernese mountain dogs?
A very unhealthy breed with a short lifespan in comparison to most other dogs, and plenty of information in the public domain. the Bernese is not a very unhealthy breed and the health issues are world wide not just in the UK Contradictory. Either it isn't unhealthy or there are worldwide health iss...

Re: How unhealthy are Bernese mountain dogs?
Update, they have spoke with the breed club who said that what she has been told is a load of rubbish and that Berneses in Switzerland are no more healthy than those here in the UK she said that the Bernese is not a very unhealthy breed and the health issues are world wide not just in the UK the mos...

How unhealthy are Bernese mountain dogs?
Ok I really need help with this , as I thought they were a healthy breed apart from the high risk of cancer and shorter lifespan. As some of you may remember my cousin is getting a Bernese mountain dog but several people have said Bernese's are know as the heartbreak breed and are very unhealthy in ...

Yep, I have had issues like Judy said Shalista  , it's very frustrating especially when you really need advice. My issues have been: IP ban problems, sometimes when I come on the forum I get told I'm banned from the forum and then under that it's says a ban has been placed on your IP address, ...

Re: Let's talk sighthounds
Also, do you have to walk Afghans on a muzzle like other sighthounds? And how do you cope\mange when the see something they see as prey? I read they go deaf to commands when the see something as prey? So if they ignore you how do you cope? Does that mean everytime they see a deer there going to be l...

Re: Let's talk sighthounds
Yes, of course. Go to Youtube and search on 'afghan obedience' or similar. I knew I knew the awnser but sometimes you just want reassurance  Obviously I need to do more research and meet more than just the comes who live near me but I think when I'm ready for my next dog ( in about 10yrs as I...

I agree with Nettle, sharing is not a natural behaviour, I know I hate sharing especially food  Sampson is very good mad and will happily steal Lara's food or chews so I separate them because I know Lara is also not the type to just allow you to take her food, she's also very independent so is ...

Re: Let's talk sighthounds
Thanks, Nettle and Judy Even though if the don't see the point to something then they won't do it, is it still possible to teach a Afghan basic obedience, and Manners like to teach your Afghan to be a well behaved member of the doggy community? And can you train a Afghan to show? ( Not like at cruft...
