Re: Lashing out without warning
Really.. no. My dogs can pick out a tiny weeny tablet from a bowl of wet meat, they can certainly avoid something poisonous on the ground! A dogs digestive tract is short and fast acting, they are well designed to cope with eating off the ground, eating things that would make US sick, eating raw me...

Re: Lashing out without warning
THe other thing that leaps out is there appears to be a lot of whizzing about and high energy activity but you don't mention any calming activity, training or one to one sessions with your dogs - so I would introduce that, take your two out for walks seperately and together and do lots of mooching,...

Thoughts on corrections ever being used ?
Hi ya'll. So I know that some trainers mainly use positive reinforcement but sometimes incorporate corrections in some limited situations of for some dogs, and say that those who refuse to ever do that are limiting iptions and closing their minds? Thoughts? Or do you have any links that discuss this...

Re: Consistent good walking on leash
What exactly are you finding so inconvenient? If you get down to dachsie level and see the world from your dog's height, you'll realise how much he needs information if you are going to change direction, stop or go. He can't read your mind. Maybe I didn't make it obvious what i meant. My problem wa...

Consistent good walking on leash
Hi all. I have an adopted adult Dachshund who I haven't really trained in the past (he's 5, I got him 2 years ago, and this is my first dog ever). I walk him every day but only in the past few months have I been training him to not pull on the leash. My basic method to train has been giving food for...

Re: Off leash safety for different dog breeds
This thread, where you raised the question earlier, should answer some of your questions: http://positively.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=21867&p=151209#p151209 As for breed specifics, I don't believe there's any breeds that should never be allowed off lead. You need to assess the individua...

Off leash safety for different dog breeds
Hi there! I have a question about dog's being off leash (in areas that aren't clearly and securely fenced in). I know some people believe that you should never ever let a dog off leash if they are in a high fenced and totally closed area, but others think that if you have really taught your dog a re...

Attitude you should use when interacting with dogs
I heard from multiple people that when you are around a dog, you should act and feel firm, calm, assertive, and like you mean business. And they also say that you have to make sure your posture and body language are confident and not slouchy. And, your voice is supposed to be deep, firm, and clear. ...

Do dogs know a real person from a fake?!
So recently a friend showed me a video that went viral, where a family had put a fake human figure out on their lawn that was a Halloween decoration. The video showed their dog dropping a tennis ball in the "person's" lap and nudging the ball like he wanted to play, and my friend kept sayi...

Does Victoria train dogs anymore?
I was looking on her bio on the Positively website, and she serves as a member of the advisory board for many nonprofits, has podcasts and live appearances, is apparently going around with police officers and police dogs, and that all seems like a huge amount of work. And she doesn't do "It's M...

Bergin University of Canine Studies? Your thoughts?
Hi all, I've seen you guys talk on here about Karen Pryor Academy and Jean Donaldson's Academy, which both sound great for learning about dogs, but I've recently heard about Bergin University of Canine Studies. Have you guys heard of it? I'm confused because it seems to be a college which just teach...

Thank you everybody for your thoughts. Sounds like the general consensus is that this wouldn't be the best starting place for me and my goals.
