Why are service dogs trained with punishment?

Throughout my life I have realized and taken notice about how service dogs are trained. I go out and see working dogs getting leash corrections. They sniff the ground, correction. They get up out of position, correction. I feel like in this day and age, ALL service dogs would be trained using the la...

Major counter surfing problem

My two year old Labrador lives on the counters! She honestly jumps on the counter about 30 times within an hour and I just cannot get her to stop. I make sure everything is cleared from the counter, but she still continues to do it even though she can't get anything. She understands when I tell her ...

How to teach a dog to find different scents?

So I have been training my dog to find treats around the house and she does really well. Every time she finds the treat, she sits. I taught her by laying out several boxes and then encouraging her to find the treat. Every time she finds the treat I click and she would self rewards herself by eating ...

Re: Barking indoors

Make sure your dog is getting plenty of physical and mental exercise. 80% of the time when a dog barks excessively its because they are not getting enough exercise. It sounds like your dog is reacting because he is stressed. I would consider talking to a professional dog trainer for the best input. ...

Re: Excitement barking

Make sure they are getting plenty of physical and mental stimulation throughout the day because a tired dog is less likely to react. I had the same problem with my 2-year old Labrador who would go crazy every time a dog walked passed our house. I watched this video from Its Me Or The Dog and tried i...

Re: Loose Leash Walking

Teaching a dog to heel without treats is like to teaching a dog to SIT reliably without the use of food. Basically what you would do is walk 20 steps and then reward with food. Then walk 20 steps again and give him lots of praise, yet don't treat. And then once he gets good at that, treat every 3rd ...

Growling Misconception

I was recently observing an puppy obedience class where this one puppy did not want to give up his toy when the handler tried to take it from him. The puppy started growling and tried not to let the handler take the toy. The instructor of the class took the puppy held the puppy down until he relaxed...

corrections for training puppies!?

I was reading a book that talked about how to raise a puppy from the time they are 6 months to 18 months. I thought it was quite harsh on some of the things the author wrote about training puppies. I personally thought it was crazy. What do you think? Check it out below: During a puppy’s development...
