Re: Keeping my dog happy when home alone

We have never had a dog that was as bad as Chi about being left at home. But, we had one that would go berserk when we came home. We finally started (almost) ignoring the dog when we came in until she settled. That helped some. You might try not making an issue about leaving, like not being in a hur...

Re: Can't remember how I taught it.

I assume you are talking about the same thing as the "stay" command. Start by teaching your dog to sit and down first. Then you just start extending the time they are attentive to you until you can move away and they will hold. If you don't know how to do this there are lots of videos available, jus...

Re: inappropriate play

A lot of pet owners forget it is your house and your rules. Don't let it get started. Separate them and send them to their rooms without TV, well you know what I mean. Give them a time out like you do kids. It may take some training on your part, but that is much better than waiting until one of the...

Re: Drooling In Car

We used to have a German Shorthaired Pointer that my Grandson showed when she was young and every trip was very unpleasant for her. This went on for several years, until she was 8 or 9, then one day she just hopped into the car when the door was open, after that she was fine. Who knows?

Re: Healthiest way of feeding dogs

Some animals will not eat something that has upset their digestion. Have you noticed any tummy upsets on any of the foods you have tried? Also, just a comment on raw meat diets. I know they are very popular and I have no problem that they are a dog's natural food, but most of the meat available is f...

Re: Rest periods from intense or specialist training

I do not know if the dogs appreciate a break or not, but I don't think it hurts them to be off for awhile. I know working farm dogs may work hard for several days and then not do much for a month.

Re: Diet for convalescing raw-fed dog

Having worked in the agricultural industry I would recommend cooking all food for your dog unless you are sure of the source. Without getting into the way meat is raised today it is enough to know that meat processing is not what it should be. Contamination of meat in processing facilities is common...

Re: Eating poo

It could be a digestive problem. You might try feeding a probiotic. It may be the food. It wouldn't hurt to try a change of diet. And, like mentioned above it is best to clean up after the dog as soon as it eliminates. Also, stay close to the dog when it goes out, call it to you and give it a reward...

Re: Dental Chews Advice

I know people who use pig ears for dog chews. They are like anything else some dogs love them some don't. Pig ears from the US are supposed to be inspected, but do not know about foreign ones.

Re: puppy will pee in pen area when left alone

Bailey is still very young. I think you are doing a good job with her with what you are doing. Just keep it up and maybe make a few tweaks like getting more exercise. She seems to be catching on the the leaving thing. We are in such a hurry to get things on a schedule that we sometimes forget that a...

Re: Help! Might have to get rid of our dog due to aggression

I would advise separating the dog from the child as soon as possible. It is not worth the chance. A friend of mine's little brother was bitten in the face when very young and still has scaring. The dog had never shown aggression towards the child before, so they never suspected anything. Your dog mi...

It may just be that the harness looks bigger than the collar. Bigger could be scarier.

Re: Need Help

From my experience working with many types of animals from pigs to horses...dogs are in there too, I have found animals react a lot from what we do, An animal is always conscious of what a human is doing when they are around. But, I think dogs are a little different because of the close bond you dev...

Re: Harness

I do not have experience with a harness for a dog, but have quite a bit of experience with horses. My suggestion would be to try a different approach to the dog when you are going to place it on him. Instead of standing over him kneel down and approach with the harness from the back. Also, don’t mak...

Re: Ears

Skin problems can be a booger. There can be so many causes for them. I did find an article on a vet site that covers a lot of ear edge problems. You can take a look here: http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/ear-edge-dermatitis-look-beyond-scabies . Hope that heals the problem. Let us know what you figu...
