Re: ANOTHER leash training post
Update: We've finally begun making VERY small progress!!! I tried a new technique (that actually appears to be frowned upon by some trainers?) in which, instead of turning and walking the other way when he pulls, I simply start walking backwards, still facing our intended direction, luring him back ...

Re: ANOTHER leash training post
No, we don't have any "true" yard. Currently, we're in an apartment that has about a 50' wide area of grass between buildings, but it is full of trees and clothing lines. It is not fenced in. We will soon be moving in to a house with a fenced yard (about 1/6 of an acre). Once we move, his ...

Re: ANOTHER leash training post
Well, quite obviously, I'm allowing him to pull in certain situations, such as in parking lots and across the street. He also has a lot of energy that isn't being properly addressed (but it's finally starting to get warm out! yay!). I think I need to also figure out a way to award the small successe...

Re: ANOTHER leash training post
Sorry for the late reply! With his pulling, it is usually a constant, strong pull towards wherever he wants to be. When he sees a bird, or a door (car, store, home) it becomes stronger lunging behavior. Right now, since we don't have a definite training pattern to use that works, we use a sort of mi...

Re: ANOTHER leash training post
He definitely is headstrong haha His pulling is about the same indoors. The only buildings he's really been in is a pet store and the building his doggy daycare used to be in. He still pulls, even when the petstore is empty. That's what I'm hoping to accomplish. I hope that all these great minds on ...

Re: ANOTHER leash training post
I can't walk extremely fast, but I don't walk terribly slow. He exercises on a 50' leash, but all training is done on a 5' leash. His pulling seems to come exclusively from his desire to find birds. A little bit from anxiety in new locations, but mostly birds. There is no interest in food, toys, or ...

ANOTHER leash training post
Hello, all! So, I STILL have not had even the smallest bit of luck with my dog (3 year old GSP) on the leash. He has moments where he does exceptionally well on the leash, randomly, and we reward him for it. However, they're random, and occur without prompt or warning, so I don't think he understand...

Re: Fear of Children
Thank you, I'll definitely start there! I think it's more about the vibrations from them running around the walkway and banging on the building. When he just hears them laughing or playing, he usually doesn't care about them (unless they're screaming bloody murder). But I'll definitely start with Yo...

Fear of Children
My GSP can be nervous around children sometimes. We live on the second floor of an apartment, families with children live below us. With this warm weather, the children have come outside to play. I am having a hard time getting my dog to even walk out the door because he is afraid of them. I believe...

Re: Storm/Noise Anxiety: Debate
I looked a little more into her idea. From what I gather, she's saying that if your dog perceives the attention/treat/play as a reward for shaking/whining/barking/cowering/etc., then the dog will continue the anxious behavior; she seems to also believe that even one instance of a reward will complet...

Re: Storm/Noise Anxiety: Debate
Her credentials are DVM, MS, DACVB. She has a handout that states that you need to ignore your dog; show know affection or attention. BUT, towards the end of the handout, she says to reward your dog with something positive when they are anxious. It honestly looks like she doesn't quite know what she...

Re: Storm/Noise Anxiety: Debate
That's my explanation, as well. I'm wondering if there's any really good articles or evidence out there.

Storm/Noise Anxiety: Debate
Hello, all! I have a different kind of question for everyone. I am in the middle of a small debate with a family member regarding storm anxiety. This came up because my dog suffers from anxiety associated with loud noises (improper/abusive gun training). I said that I discovered that if I play with ...

Re: Leash Aggression
If she's lunging, I would avoid the Gentle Leader. She can hurt her neck if she goes too crazy. I'd agree that the situation might have gotten worse because of the winter weather. My dog is also catching some cabin fever. Try getting some physical exercise whenever you can, and keep up with the ment...
