two questions

Does anyone do any focus games/have any suggestions of focus games to do with my dog, first of all? Thanks in advance! Next, my dog knows when he has to go into his 'room' and resists - if you put a lead on him, he pulls out of it, if you try to carry him (he's pretty small for a lab) he flops over,...

Re: Training help

He has either cheese for treats normally, because we usually don't get chicken or dog treats except for bones and toys, ect.
Maybe he's bored of the cheese?

Training help

I have this other dog, here's the basic info - he's a male beagle, six months, and he loves other people and dogs. He sleeps with our other dog in a crate and in the morning is let out for about ten minutes, and an hour after his breakfast he gets walked (sometimes with the other dog). After that, h...

Re: Isn't working?

Thanks again! I'm following all the advice.
What about my other dog, who isn't very food motivated? I'm taking him to training classes but he doesn't seem to concentrate. Any ideas?

Re: Isn't working?

Thank you for the advice! By hardly ever, I mean 98 percent of the time, and we know not to leave food out on tables and counters, so the dogs take inedible things like plastic, tinfoil, things like that which we then have to take off them. And my dog is big enough to leap onto the table; he just si...

Isn't working?

My dog, thankfully, is getting better at recall. Thanks for the help/advice! I was wondering how to stop behavior that I find unacceptable, such as jumping on the table (even when there's no food on it), counter-surfing (same), and similar things. I know about the "a dog is never being naughty&...

Re: Help?

Thanks for the advice! Though to me, the dogs don't seem distressed, they seem to look pretty happy, and not at all like the dogs Cesar Millan 'works with'. I can't see any/hardly any stress signal, and i've studied dog body language. Not that I'm supporting shock collars, of course. My dog i...

Help?

What do you think of these people? http://www.g3dogs.com/ We're thinking about getting them to train our (disobedient at recall) pup, the Labrador cross. I would love train him myself, positively - had I not already tried. His recall is a mess still, and though we're working on it, here's the thing ...

Recall getting worse...

My dog is actually seeming to get worse at recall as he ages. Here's some info on him, if needed: He's a 9-month old Labrador Retriever (though he appears younger because he has such short legs) He has a walk an hour after his breakfast, sometimes off-lead, most of the time on. He heels nicely and c...

Re: Vent!

May I join in? ^^ Anyway, today I came across Cesar Millan's website while searching for the usual dog training articles on the internet, and found this: http://www.cesarsway.com/dogwhisperer/episode-archive/season-4-episode-18 He listens to new ideas? He doesn't seem to listen to us positive reinfo...

Re: Really?

Agreed, Labsrule. I tried to get them to see how the dominance theory is flawed and all that stuff, but they are the kind of people who if they've been told something stick to it. Which isn't so good for the dog. And he wears the choke chain all the time, when it could easily get caught on things, l...

Really?

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but anyways, I know this dog (a beautiful black labrador retriever) who is reactive to dogs and people, and totally not safe to be in public. The owners live in the countryside and he never sees anyone apart from when he comes to the town, but then he's too s...

Re: Pup scared of people! Help needed

Thanks, everyone. @Jacksdad - Congratulations with that, it's a great example how much difference positive training makes. Speaking of that, I know a dog who's dog and human fearful, we raised him as a pup but sadly don't have him full-time any more. So, as the fear got worse, the owners have called...

Re: Pup scared of people! Help needed

Thanks for the pointer, Emmabeth. :D I'm trying to condition him, and some progress seems to be made, but since we live in a quiet area it's hard to tell exactly. So, when a person appears you give him a treat, right? I know the basic concept of this, but I'm not sure of anything else.

Re: Pup scared of people! Help needed

Thank you for linking to that thread, if that's all it is I'm glad that I'm not doing anything wrong with him myself.

I'll try what you said, and see if he improves. :D This morning on his walk I took some cheese and gave him some when he passed strangers quietly, that seemed to work a bit.
