Learning the "STOP" command
A week ago my 2 year old sheltie got away from me at a park where we were walking. I was taking his rain coat off him and maybe the pulling of the Velcro scared him ( I've probably put the coat on & off him a 100 times), but he took off like a bat out of hell, running down the path, around the l...

Won't Urinate if he thinks I want him to
My Casey, a nearly 21 month old sheltie, has recently refused to urinate if I ask him to. If I take him out for a last 'Pee" of the night, he gets a "deer in the headlight" look about him, runs a short circle in the yard, and runs to the back door. No amount of begging will get him to...

Re: Problem teaching "Down" command
Thank you all so very much for your good advice & ideas. I probably should have given Casey a break before starting the Level II class. He does seem to enjoy most everything but the down. I don't think he has any physical problems. He has went down twice inside on living room rug and once outsid...

Re: Problem teaching "Down" command
Guys, It isn't absolutely vital he do a down, but I wanted to get his Canine Good Citizen title and maybe do Rally or Agility. I guess to me it is vitally important. To him, not so much. I have told him if we never get a down, then we just never get one, but we keep trying. He absolutely does not li...

Problem teaching "Down" command
My 11 month old sheltie has a problem doing a "down" on verbal command. In training since September, he has still only done three "downs" off a verbal command. Otherwise it takes a lure to get him down. He simply doesn't want to do a "down". He will do other commands li...

Problem with Down Command
My six month old sheltie is doing pretty well in training class but having problems with the "down" command. He will usually go down with a lure but as soon as he hits the ground he pops right back up. He does a sit-stay very well, comes when called. He's very smart but we've got a block w...

Re: Lucky still having problems when walking
I am sorry if this double posts. I don't think the last post went anywhere. Thank you so much for you reply. I better understand where Lucky is coming from. I have a lot of work to do with him and a lot of understanding the beagle nature. I'm a sheltie person and want to get Lucky a sheltie sister i...

Lucky still having problems when walking
My rescue dog Lucky, who I have had nearly eight weeks, is doing better in some areas of his walking. I have taken some suggestions from here, along with his training, and some areas are better. However tonight was a nightmare. I took him to a local park, not a dog park, just a park with walking tra...

Re: Deaf Ear to the word "NO"
GWD-Thanks for a great reply. Makes perfect sense to me about the concept of "no". I am no doubt Lucky's biggest problem. I had a sheltie who was very food motivated but he didn't pay a lot of attention to Gunner's food bowl but then again I didn't leave it down too long because I didn't w...

Re: Deaf Ear to the word "NO"
I may have not explained myself clearly so I'll try to do so. Lucky is a beagle so I know the "nose" is hyperactive. The "no" problem I am having is just basically that: when he is doing something that I don't want him to do, I can't stop him from doing it. I can sometime redirec...

Deaf Ear to the word "NO"
My Lucky, rescued six weeks ago, is doing better. He comes when called, knows a few commands, but has no concept of the word "No". I have a weak voice and that may be some of the problem, but I can say "No" until I"m blue in the face and if he is in a prey mode (he's a beagl...

Re: My nightmare walks
Emmabeth,
Thanks for some really good advice. He did better tonight, we went a different route. We need to back up a bit.

Re: My nightmare walks
Sorry. He wears a halter. He doesn't do as bad if we go another route but this particular trouble area is an area all but one of his walk routes takes him past.

My nightmare walks
My rescue dog Lucky, who I have had for three weeks, is a nightmare to walk. He gets distracted by birds & Squirels but I have been managing that so-so by giving him treats to redirect him and also using a clicker. However we reach a point in the walk, same area each time, where he pulls into th...
