Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Poor Jasper is worn out! Most days he's had a good walk in the morning, but then dragged around 'sightseeing', and then taken to pubs for lunch. The 'sightseeing' and pub lunches shouldn't be tiring, but as he's not the most relaxed of dogs, he probably doesn't rest properly in the pubs or when we ...

Re: Pixie and Jack's excellent meadow adventure

http://i68.tinypic.com/2vrtocm.jpg I finally figured out how to turn the photo around the right way. (Hopefully this is now upright.) It might just be my new favourite photo of Pixie. Alongside these ones anyway: http://i68.tinypic.com/2lij6z5.jpg http://i65.tinypic.com/343t1s6.jpg http://i63.tinyp...

Re: I'm growing to hate walking my dogs

In addition to the excellent advice about counter-conditioning and walking them separately, I'm wondering whether they're getting enough exercise and mental stimulation. Doxies are such smart little dogs, and personally, I think every dog needs at least two short walks a day, regardless of weather. ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Took Jack and Pixie up to the vets on Monday, Jack has some lumps on his chest, which feel like harmless fatty deposits, but had biopsied just in case. He has had a more worrying lump removed from his head before, so better safe than sorry. Jack was an angel about being examined, even when having his...

Re: Vent!

In a small retail park near my new place, some idiot owner looking to give banned breeds an even worse name was standing with a hugely powerful bully breed I couldn't even properly identify. A mastiff/pit bull/American Bulldog type mix, with a solid mastiff like head, bulging muscles and about the h...

Re: Aggression in my dog, what caused it and how do I handle it?

Using treats for training is way different from making the dog perform for all its food. Mealtime should be nice calm safe stress-free downtime. While some breed/types love performing, others do not, and some may refuse to eat or develop anxiety issues if they have to perform for every mouthful. As...

Re: Dog scared of my brother

Yes, it's fear, likely from a previous experience, that's causing her reactions, not hating your brother. I can see how hard it is for him, and why it feels personal, but she will also be highly sensitive to his moods and his reactions, so he needs to try to accept that it's fear causing this, and n...

Re: Male or female I can't choose?

Sorry, I should have finished my coffee before replying to this one too! :D Okay, the second dog is still hypothetical, so can disregard some of my advice. In your shoes, I'd be likely to go for a female dog first, if you're planning to get a male. The other thing to consider is when you plan to get...

Re: Male or female I can't choose?

Our experience of always having a two dog household is that a male/female pairing is the most likely to get along. Followed by two males. Two females is the most difficult combo, especially if closely matched in age/breed/size, as they're likely to compete with each other for Head ***** in Charge st...

Re: Welsh spinger Spaniel?

I'm sorry, I've no experience with a Welsh Springer to compare to the English ones I've had/known. I find it hard to believe that their energy levels would be that much lower though, rather than take that one guy's word for it, maybe call around a few breeders and see what they say about it? I'd be ...

Haha! Yes, that's why I got a close up of Pixie's face covered in seeds! They were both eating the grass. I had a lot of grooming to do when we got home!

Thanks guys, we had fun :D

Pixie and Jack's excellent meadow adventure

http://i65.tinypic.com/8vycr4.jpg http://i68.tinypic.com/moxuw.jpg Not the best photo, but I finally managed to get her tail plume in a photo! Usually she's such a blur, it's hard to capture her tail feathering http://i64.tinypic.com/2mqul94.jpg I lay down in the grass and pointed the camera up, re...

Re: Gundogs?

A pointer or a setter might be good for her. I'm thinking german short-haired pointer, but not entirely sure why I'm leaning that way, just a gut feeling. Prey drive would be something to be aware of though, so I'd look along show rather than working lines, and see if she'd be interested in training...
