Here is some video of Glacier's first run. About 4 minutes worth. https://youtu.be/mnrkBNdyxwA

Aufeis' first run was also recorded. 2 minutes, 45 seconds. https://youtu.be/eMJ47X-1jKM

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

Nettle reminded me that it's been a very long time since I've posted an update, so here goes. Hardpack, now known as Hardy, settled very quickly into his new home in Mancos, Colorado. Now, as a yearling, he is already running lead for Veryl's small team, has posed for a couple of new paintings, and ...

Re: No Mark or No Reward Marker?

We use the 'click' or reward mark to communicate what we like. I only seems fair to use an NRM (properly timed, of course) to communicate what we don't like. I simply use the work "nope" or "no" and walk away for a bit. Sometimes I'm just talking to myself rather than the dog, an...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

I feel I should apologize for my recent absence on the forum. It's just past the middle of our mushing season and between working for money, raising the working with the puppies and running my sled dogs (along with volunteering for the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race) and some other things I...

Re: Catching dog urine!

If you could attach a margarine tub (or maybe even a ladle?) or similar to a long stick, you might be able to position that under him from far enough away that he won't be distracted. You could also give him a big bowl of something like chicken broth so when he does go, he's gonna keep on going for...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

Hardpack is doing very well in the house, all things considered. He even let me get a good four hours of sleep last night (sigh). Seriously, he's mastered stairs, both inside and outside the house. He's explored every possible nook and cranny, and some I wouldn't have thought possible. He hasn't had...

Re: How to put this nicely or leave it alone?

If we want to make changes, the best way is from within, so I would say stay in the committee if this really matters to you. Some people love to make up 'rules' for others to follow. It's straight from the school playground and annoys the hell out of me. Probably the park doesn't need any more rule...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

At 16 weeks of age, but puppies are rapidly growing and learning about the world. Socialization has proceeded pretty well and it's quickly coming time to separate them from each other, and let them start learning how to live and get along with other dogs in the kennel. Hardpack will be leaving for a...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

We've been very busy up here in the Great White North. Several good training runs with various teams, including a superb job of breaking trail through deep, new snow. Unfortunately, the dogs worked well, but the video camera worked not at all (sigh). Trish and I are also hustling about preparing 16 ...

Re: Rest periods from intense or specialist training

Actually, in the context of sled dogs training can mean both conditioning and training. For example, dogs need to learn how to rest comfortably in camp, run through overflow without hesitation, and so forth. They also need physical conditioning. Those long runs that some mushers can coax out of thei...

Re: Rest periods from intense or specialist training

My job at a remote site well beyond the edge of no-where has my sled dogs working hard for two weeks, and then "off" for two. Like most things in life, it has both desirable and undesirable consequences. On the undesirable side, I am not able to consistently maintain the dogs in the peak o...

Re: New Litter of Positive Alaskan Sled Dog Puppies

I was scheduled to return to work on Wednesday (New Year's Eve), but weather conditions made it impossible for us to land, so I was home that evening. As I was feeding neighbors across the highway (about an eighth of a mile or so away) began shooting off fireworks while I was out feeding the dogs. W...

Re: Behavioral comparison of singleton puppy vs litter

It is nice to hear that he is settling in and learning to stand up for himself. Do you think the coordination improvement is from age since he is a little younger than your crew or would you attribute it to having other puppies to keep up with and play with. So I guess I am saying would you attribu...
