Actually, I was answering to a comment that seemed a tad snippy regarding fences - and clearly written by someone who has no idea of the residential landscape that is California where 6 -8 foot fences are the norm. Of course the additional comment regarding "inadequate fences" or "car...

Fences are certainly a good thing............but don't beat surgical intervention. Determined dogs, and I hear this all the time with people looking for their strays at my shelter, will dig under a fence or chew the fence boards out. Then there are the occasional accidents where the gate is left ope...

Whitchick, Sorry if I came off too hard at first but you will have more settled dogs once they are altered. I work at a shelter in addition to doing behavior evaluatiions, consults and fostering for an Aussie rescue group so I see a lot of unwanted pets. Thanks for taking the rescue. Emmabeth, At th...

A VERY IMPORTANT CORRECTION TO THE ABOVE (and an example of how a typo can embarass a chihuahua) In fact, w/out the distractions females have when they are in heat, or that males might experience while still intact, I find them easier to train and far better focused. In fact my dogs which have been...

I'm sorry if it comes across as "scare mongering" or criticizing w/ vigour but I know these things to be fact and sometimes the facts are hard to hear. Call me crazy but I'm going to go w/ the science/health and yes, even BEHAVIOR reasons for spaying and neutering. Then there's also the ma...

You have rescues and mixed breed females that haven't been altered? Maybe it's different over there but here our rescues know there are too many of the breed we are rescuing already. We don't want more pouring into our rescue or shelters so we make sure they are altered before they ever go out again...

She should see a vet just to rule out demodectic mange ( http://www.marvistavet.com/html/demodectic_mange.html ). It's not contagious to humans and can be managed w/ oral meds or regular dips (or both - I know at the shelter I'm at we usually give cephalexin and sometimes Ivermectin as well) It coul...

Has her dog always been like this? Has it come on with age? As dogs get older some may become more sensitive to noises. I would also be very concerned about leaving him outside when the weather gets this way. Storms and the 4th of July bring LOADS of dogs into the shelter! I'm not sure if it's been ...

Yes, they did got the dog from someone, I think it was an accidental litter. The shock collar no longer works, the dog chewed it off and into bits. They don't want to give up the dog. I've lectured them (one by one, you can never get them all in the same room at once) and told them that if they wan...

Careful of how you introduce your dog to livestock - you don't want her getting kicked in the head. Have you thought about hiding some of her things around your property for her to find? Stashing bones and favorite toys and some treats might keep her busy. Anytime she sees something moving, however,...

I wonder how badly those people WANT the dog. Sounds like they got a gift during another gifting holiday and now they are tired of the gift. Well trained dogs take effort and if they've given up on it I doubt they will put any effort in the training. While I can't stand hearing that people have reso...

Pretty much everything emmabeth said. I would also add that it's a good idea to keep your comings and goings low key. When you leave the house don't even acknowledge the dog. When you come back into the house ignore the dog for at least 15 minutes. It helps to cut down on the anxiety that can build ...

Hmmm.... You've got 3 tough little cases there! I think the command of "come" is a very important command in ANY lifestyle. I always tell people that I don't care if they teach their dogs to sit or down. I care that they teach their dogs to come and wait because those are two commands that...

Re: Dog and New Dangerous Behavoirs.

Hello, I have a one year old Australian Cattle Dog. Her name is Hannah and she's a wonderful dog. She's recently picked up some bad and dangerous behavoirs. First of all, she has recently started chasing cars. She's an outside dog and has never had problems with vehicles passing the house. We're in...

You have a dog that needs a job. I love the herders just for that reason. In your case, you haven't given your dog a job so she's giving herself one. You own one of the smartest breeds out there and you do NOT want to leave it up to her to figure out what to do to entertain herself. Better to put he...
