Re: Aggression in 9 week old puppy

Thanks for the input, everyone. I have definitely shown them how to take things slow and pair touch with super yummy treats. So far this seems to be going well. I agree about he puppy possibly being overwhelmed--I think they have mainly tried to pick him up when he was having/about to have an accide...

Aggression in 9 week old puppy

Hi all! Long time no chat. :D So I've done two private lessons with a family that has the cutest 9-week-old Rottweiler pup. He is perfect in every way, except that when you touch him under the armpits or try to lift him (even if you try to go slowly and are not leaning directly over him), he display...

Re: anxiety and fear of men

It can be very disheartening and frustrating when your dog is fearful and can't be around you. Try to explain to your dad that you've only had Chloe a few days, so she is extremely new to the household and just trying to process what is happening. If you were moved from what you saw as your home--an...

Re: Puppy snaps when given 'in your bed' command

Yes, I would try luring her onto the bed or otherwise changing your posture and using a less imposing gesture.

Could also be that this is an excited, playful snap? Some dogs, when excited, will snap in the air but it's not aggressive at all.

Re: Vent!

This morning I omitted a most important extra, for which I thank Jacksdad. For a lot of people, it is rewarding to them when they frighten or punish their dogs. Sometimes they are aware of this - sometimes not. Therefore those of us who train dogs and their people need to offer the people side of t...

Re: Business tips, aka help me be a more effective +R trainer.

Sorry for the lack of details! I deal with obedience, tricks, puppy training, and behavior mod (problem behaviors, fear, aggression). No group classes yet, but I plan to do Shock-Free Snake Avoidance in spring. I am a member of APDT and PPG. This is my website, and critiques on that are welcome also...

Business tips, aka help me be a more effective +R trainer.

The title kind of says it all. I officially opened my business in December of last year, and it has become painfully clear that I don't know the first thing about running a business. I do get business, but I have a feeling it should be more than it is. One of my biggest problems is "making the ...

Or hyenas taught to present their necks for a blood draw. Kind of difficult to alpha roll a hyena, I'd think, and the presenting of the neck while a needle is inserted isn't exactly natural.

Re: Petco/Smart Dog Trainers

It really depends on the trainer. My first experience with professional training was through a PetSmart puppy class, and our trainer was great. She introduced us to the clicker and used positive methods. I was very pleased with the class, and it helped spark my passion for training. :)

Re: Vent!

My grandpa hunts deer and elk with a compound bow, and my dad used to do some bird hunting with a 20 gauge. Once, when my sister and I were around 6 years old, we begged our dad to take us quail hunting with him. We found our quarry and he shot it. The poor thing was still alive, so he had to break ...

Yeah, I think that if you are going to use a gun, you should be well-trained to do so (which I certainly am not).

I'm currently in Phoenix, originally from Bullhead City. :) Nice to see other SW people.

Re: Vent!

Fundog, are you in AZ? Because in this state you don't event need a permit for a concealed carry. I don't carry a gun and probably never will. Furthermore, I don't think I could ever use one on a dog, even if I had one and my dog was being attacked. I would be too afraid to miss and hit my o...
