Re: Dog DNA tests

I was given the tests as a gift. Bella is from an area in California where there are a lot of feral or country mixed breed dogs who look like her. The mother dog was feral and I never saw her. The test called her a Labrador, chow chow ,mixed breed unknown, crossed with a Rottweiler, vizsla, mixed br...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Went to a university vet hospital my veterinarian referred me to today for my fear aggressive dog Bella to see a veterinary behaviorist. Normally the majority of the appointment is dedicated to learning training techniques, clicker training, and counter conditioning methods, etc. but I got to skip a...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Lucy has been doing agility classes for over a year now, we are now in competition training and have competed in a few trials. With my other dog Bella being fear aggressive, it's nice to have a dog I can do things with. This past weekend I went for three days to the central coast in California and L...

Has anyone had experience with this condition?

I have a friend who adopted a border collie lab mix and it has cystinuria. It's a genetic condition that causes cysteine to not be processed normally and crystals to form into stones in the bladder. He had to have several surgeries already to remove these stones, some of them emergency surgeries. He...

Re: Irrational fears

In my opinion, yes they do. Bella is neophobic, meaning fear of new things. So she is scared of new objects. The first time I left a cereal box on the counter and walked away, she later came in the kitchen by herself and went bananas. From the sound she was making I thought someone broke in, I come ...

Blue sky and green grass

Took the dogs on a New Years run. Very cold temeratures but clear skies here and with the rain after a long drought the grass is finally green. They were both very happy. They are both five years old now and have been through five years of college with me, "we" graduate this spring. Lucy i...

Re: Can dogs be described as "manipulative"???

Haha! Lucy has done the same thing! She loves coffee which I know is bad for dogs. She kept trying to get my coffee but I wouldn't let her. She then went to the door and hit the noise making button that means she needs to go outside. So I get up and as soon as my hand is on the door to open it she s...

Books for Raw?

So I am graduating college after my spring semester and moving back home. I finally will have freezer space to feed raw and my mom wants to try it with her dog to. My question is what are some books to read, only that help figure out what to feed...not just kibble bashing. Or are books unnecessary? ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Lucy and I had our second agility trial yesterday. It went a lot smoother than the first. For our first class we had jumpers and she ran clean and did great. It actually went so fast and we did so well I thought I must have missed some jumps  . We ended up getting a qualifying run and a second ...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Lucy is a little scared of the teeter in agility because if the noise it makes. It kind of sounds like a cookie sheet crashing to the ground...its pretty loud. To help her get used to making objects make loud noises happen (she has always hated loud noises) I am training her to knock over empty soda...

Re: Newly adopted dog is snapping at family

If she approaches him and he is sitting or standing and just having normal conversations then yes I would tell him to completely ignore her as if she is not there even if she is sniffing at his legs and standing real close. That is the point I find many people want to at least speak to my fearful do...

Re: Newly adopted dog is snapping at family

If your dog is fearful of men the last thing you want to do is force interaction between men and your dog. When you say she allowed him to pet her she probably was giving lots of warnings for him to leave her alone with body language which he ignored and pet her anyways, which is what led to her sna...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Lucy and I had our first agility trial today. She didn't qualify in any of her two runs but she did really well, it was me that needs to learn to be a better handler, I get a little lost on the course. I was so nervous she would be afraid of the judge or distracted, but she ran really well and clean...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Signed Lucy up for our first agility trial. It's the first weekend of October and I only signed up for Saturday as I'm not sure how she will do with crating, the noise, the crowd, the judge...with everything I guess  . And we are just signed up in the intro class which is more for first time do...
