Non Linear Dogs

This is very long, very detailed and can be read in segments if anyone's interested. But it should help clarify why basing the way we view, interact with and train dogs should not have it's basis in pack theory, assuming dogs view us as "pack" members, wolf (another animal)behavior, domina...

A-h-h...I see. Well, that must be a bit difficult for your sister. I do hope she recovers soon. I know how it is. I recently injured my back moving my piano....herniated disc which is impinging on nerves running down my leg so I'm out of commission right now too. Luckily, my dogs are all adults and ...

I wouldn't worry about walks at his young age other than around your own yard. What I do with new puppies is make certain that the leash is not something to fear or dislike. I just walk around the house and pat my thigh, make squeeky, playful noises and encourage the pup to come along with me. I dro...

I highly recommend a couple of great books for this very thing: Emma Parson's Click to Calm and/or Fight, by Jean Donaldson. If you start at square one and go through the step by step process, outlined in Click to Calm, I think you could make some good progress. It's very, very good. This can happen...

I forgot to mention to be sure to reward the dog immediately...within 3 seconds of the desired behavior or he'll be onto something else and that's what you'll be reinforcing. I probably forgot other things too. Arrrggggg. Your sister can also look for other opportunities to slip in that train...

You're right. Your sister is bribing the dog. When she mentions the word, "treat" or offers a treat while the dog is not coming, she is actually rewarding the dog for whatever it is he's doing....going the other way, sniffing around bushes. Never ever reinforce behavior you don't want. The...

Here are a couple of my favorite articles on teaching bite inhibition. They're excellent! I encourage you to read them both.

I don't post often here, but this caught my eye. Tug of war has been perceived by many as teaching a dog opposition or that it can make a dog challenge his owner for "top dog" position. I disagree absolutely and totally. I see tug as a cooperative "killing" game, if any sort of &...

Your dogs should never be off leash if there is a road near by. Here's another thread that explains some stuff.

Training a reliable recall isn't something that happens in just a short time. It's a day to day process that needs continued attention for a very long time. It is one of the most difficult tasks to get reliable because there are so many more interesting things in the environment that the dog would r...

Oh my! You must be so worried about her. I do hope they'll find out what is causing these seizures and that it can be treated. I am so sorry you're going through this. No. Don't beat yourself up. Listen. I got my Doberman from a very reputable breeder. She, in fact won the breeder of the year award ...

Things like treats that are not easy to find...special toys reserved for alone time . I wrote that. I should say that at first, make the things easy to find until he gets onto the game...and gradually make them more hidden. It's lots of fun for dogs. You can hide Kong toys with a little peanut butt...

You're absolutely right Emmabeth. His anxiety might cause some of that vomitting, but if it's excessive, I'm such a paranoid person, I'd probably want to make sure it wasn't something else. But that's probably based on my own personal experiences in the past with a dog that threw up a lot. It turned...
