Walking the dogs

When you walk your dogs, do you control where they walk? I.E. Do you let your dogs walk in the front of you? Back? Side? When I walk Shadow, I let him walk anywhere he likes. He prefers to walk by my side or behind me, but if we are running/jogging. He would speed up in the front sometimes it gets i...

Re: Leash Aggression towards other dogs (long- sorry)

LmJames, if a dog is fearful, you can keep the leash loose and puff up your chest and act as brave as you want - but if you don't take steps to remove the response from the dog (ie all the desensitization training, watch me training, rewards for calm behavior, slowly decreasing distance, etc.) all ...

Re: Leash Aggression towards other dogs (long- sorry)

Mattie, Actually, I agree completely what you explained in the above post about the flight and fight mode. I believe my post was a poor example how to work with a dog like this. You are right when a dog is being nervous and something is scaring or exciting him. That is why I explained in my previous...

Re: Walking on a hot pavement

I have been to Las Vegas and it's DAMN HOT! I walk my dog late at night and in the early morning too to avoid the heat. :D

Re: Leash Aggression towards other dogs (long- sorry)

My dog is reactive toward other dogs, and it's worse when she's on the lead. I don't think it has anything to do with how I hold the leash (it can be a 30ft completely slack lead or a taut 4ft, she reacts the same), Well, you forget that your dog is not the OP's dog. Each dog is different. We don't...

Re: Exercise the Mind...

If I had no time to keep my dog's mind occupied then I would use his toys to keep him busy. I would put treats in a buster cube dog treat, everlasting ball, and bob-a-lot dog treat. My dog likes the everlasting treats the best, but I think bob-a-lot dog treat keep him busy! :D http://www.dogtoys.com...

Re: I'm at the end of my leash - considering meds now

if I am gone for more than 5 or so minutes she comes looking for me. If she can't find me or get to me then she eliminates. I will start concentrating our evening training on stay and see if we can get up to 30 minutes.... Yes you can get it up to 30 minutes if my dog could stay down for hours when...

Re: Walking on a hot pavement

Yeah some dogs can tolerate the weather, but I live in Arizona. We always get 100 or higher. Just because it is only 100 doesn't mean the pavement is measured at 100 F and it can get up to 140 F or higher. My dog can't stand walking on the pavement during the day because I have seen him lift his fro...

Walking on a hot pavement

Today I went to Wal mart and saw a man walking with his dog on a pavement. I wanted to offer him a ride, but I didn't. When I saw his dog walking on the pavement with no boots, I had to cringe. I wish he left his dog at home. It was really hot and the temperature reached 100. Last week a man who liv...

Re: I'm at the end of my leash - considering meds now

I forgot something else to add. Reward her when she did her "down stay" exercise correctly with a lot of praise, and treats. Also, let her follow you around and hang out with you when she did what you ask her to do. You want her to realize that when you ask her to down and stay, it means s...

Re: I'm at the end of my leash - considering meds now

Dogs with SA are not funny to deal with. You can try the medication, but I believe it will not work. I don't mean to be pessimist because I know a several ones. I'm going to ask a couple of questions. Have you tried to exercise her before you put her in a crate or room alone? Sometimes getting a goo...

Re: Leash Aggression towards other dogs (long- sorry)

If the dog is only aggressive when he is leashed, I believe it has to do with how you hold the leash so pay carefully how you hold it. Try to keep it loose and don't get so tense up when you see somebody walks by the dog, but be sure to pay attention to how focus he gets. When he focus on something ...

Re: My dogs don't get along!

I have tried that we stop her each time she hits him. He has gone after her before but that did nothing if anything she goes after him more. We separate them each time she hits him then let her back in the room, she doesn’t do it as much but she does it more when other people are visiting. I’ll try...

Re: Vibrating Collars?

I was speaking with a local K9 officer yesterday about his Malinois and Doberman (the Malinois was the K9, Dobe just a regular pet), and I did ask what sort of training they used with the dogs. He admitted he did once train with e-collars, but one of his fellow officers had a dog that needed to be ...
