Re: How long does it take for a dog to stop pining after someone

Don't know about pining, but an old girlfriend's dog remembered me after 3 years. It was quite touching really. She didn't recognise me, but when I tapped her on the head with a newspaper, she remembered me and went bananas. As for pining, I would guess it depends on other distractions. If bored and...

Re: I am surprised!

Things like this can really rattle your confidence and sense of security K9Steve and leave you with a sense of dread that there is more to come. I can't imagine your dog might get in trouble for defending your home; fact is the presence and actions of the dog stopped the incident escalating into a m...

Re: I've started doing dog photography!

Odin's first, and last, encounter with a guinea pig (why did I say hamster???) really didn't go so well. Does Odin share that opinion? Or does he think it went very well? Believe it or not, he was young and didn't mean any harm. "Look what I've found!" Look! Look! Look! "Oh sh____!!!" The Gui...

Odin's first, and last, encounter with a guinea pig (why did I say hamster???) really didn't go so well. If you'd taken his picture that day, there would have numbers along the bottom.

Re: Animal Heroes

There is a good program called Wardogs about the dogs recruited by the US military in WW2. The dogs were 'volunteered' for military service by their owners, and if the survived the war and could be de-programmed so they didn't attack people, they went back to the families they came from. The future ...

Re: I've started doing dog photography!

If I had to take pictures of a CM Negative Reinforcement trainer, I would do it, send him the rubbish photo's and say "Sorry chum. Best I could do. Your dog just seems terribly sad and miserable about something, but here's my bill". You have to show these trainers who's boss even if you have alpha r...

Re: Thank you!

I treat dogs, both my own or other people's, getting out of vehicles as a heightened anxiety moment. Its like unfamiliar dogs meeting on a narrow path where they are bound to pass too close for each others comfort. Getting out a vehicle with other dogs in close proximity is a potential flashpoint. I...

Re: Thank you!

Just to keep you motivated Bendog, there's a 'gun' who turns up at pheasant shoots, who arrives, opens the back door of the Range Rover. On command by individual name, he gets his gun dogs out one by one, who jump out and dutifully trot behind him and come to heel sitting waiting for a command. Its ...

Re: Oh duck!

That sounds odd Judy. I struggle a bit to work out what Jasper was thinking. I can follow a dog being defensive about you approaching his treat, but I don't understand why he's so possessive about the treat even at the point of you giving it to him. That strikes me as a good way to stop getting trea...

Re: LAPD shoots rottie

Its never pretty to watch, but very often the 'writhing' you see isn't pain or non fatal wounding but merely nerves and muscles flexing. I would reckon poor Max was gone from this earth virtually instantaneously. That's probably the only good news in the whole rotten story.

Re: Sheep

I can walk my pair through a field of sheep and off the lead too, and not have any problem. Even the sheep don't seem alarmed by it. Would I trust my dogs in the same situation but with me not there? Nope. I'm not certain there would be a problem, but how long can a dog resist the temptation of furr...

Re: LAPD shoots rottie

Don't forget either, there is a breed of person who likes a dog to be aggressive, and if it bites a policeman it's no bad thing. In the world of pit bulls, rotties, and 'dangerous dogs' in general, we need to recognise the police have an added layer of threat to be aware of. I'm not a policeman, but...

Re: LAPD shoots rottie

How very sad for Max. Whoever was to blame, it sure wasn't him. I don't blame the cop, although I wouldn't commend him for bravery either. The owner is the reason it all happened, and the buck stops with him. When you have a big dog, there's an added layer of responsability that goes along with it. ...

Re: Interesting and possibly touching video

Sorry K9Queen, it is touching to watch, but that's just not how I interpret the dogs behaviour. I don't want to be heartless, nor do I wish to offend peoples sensibilities who think that's a canine funeral they're watching. I just don't believe it is, but I hope you won't ask me to explain. My terri...
