Re: A bit of a poser. Highly reactive dog training. (long)

Having read through the whole thread, I get the feeling you are a bit defensive or not open to peoples ideas - read through again and keep in mind 'where is the harm in trying' - if you didn't want help you wouldn't be here - so what HARM will it do to try not going to dog park for a couple of week...

Re: A bit of a poser. Highly reactive dog training. (long)

Do a search of Jacksdad's first posts and read through when you have time. There's a ton of great advice there when he was going through similar issues with his dog (for the dog reactivity). Hmm...if she is shutting down on walks, her fear level is pretty high and a bit over my head as far as train...

Re: A bit of a poser. Highly reactive dog training. (long)

I think I see what you are saying, but I am sort of confused. :? Everything that you have written has described a dog who really does not want her personal space invaded by a strange dog. True. But it is the over reaction that is the prob. If Kenzie is on my left side, and Joe Shmoe has his dog on ...

Gah, I'm sorry for the many he/she mix ups. No prob... I still call babies "it" half the time! LOL I was more worried that I had not done a good job of explaining the problem and background. We honestly are not pushing this dog hardly at all. It is amazing how far she has come sinc...

Re: A bit of a poser. Highly reactive dog training. (long)

I don't think I explained things well. Firstly... I do NOT force things on her. We now own 8 different sets of dog bowls just so we could find a set she was comfortable with. I do not move these bowls around in an attempt to make her get used to me doing so. Why bother? I admit that I DO insist she ...

Re: working with foster dog

Best thing would be to get some men you know to meet you on the walk and have THEM throw a treat to the dog from a distance. Eventually, the dog will think men are treat dispensers instead of scary. Once the dog gets better and the guy can approach, have him give the dog a command (sit is always a f...

Re: Will I ever be able to bring home a new puppy??

I just read through the forum rules again and am pretty sure I can post this link. If not, I apologize heartily. There is some great info here on how to add a new dog: http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/introducing_new_dog.html If Oscar does well with other dogs everywhere but at home, b...

Re: What is the best tools to use when training a dog to heel?

PATIENCE! lol Treats and touch training work great most of the time. Get a target stick clicker if your dog is so low he cannot touch your hand with his nose while walking. Remember to use high-value treats! I personally have never had much luck with the "don't go forward if they are pulling&qu...

Re: Almost ready to get rid of puppy .............

Is Jamie fixed? That may help, and unless you plan to breed (and I can see no reason you would or even should) it may really help. I too am a big believer in tether training. It is hard for a dog to misbehave when they are right underfoot and can not be sneaky. I do have to wonder about the babysitt...

A bit of a poser. Highly reactive dog training. (long)

I will try to keep this short while giving as much info as possible. Skip to the last paragraph for my real dilemma if you are not one for background. We got Mackenzie, who is now about 4-5 years old, in July 2010 from an animal shelter. She was a MESS. It took us 3 hours just to get all the urine s...
