Re: Question?

GSDs are more sensitive to their handlers' emotions. That's why they are alright as guide dogs or physical assistance dogs, but are not often used for psychiatric work. Labs and goldens still pick up on their handler's emotions, but don't break down if their handler has a panic attack (usually). Sin...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DgysIJgX0AAhekT.jpg Moving stuff in and of course the first things in the apartment were dog stuff ;) Then a bit of food, and a set of chairs and a table that I got for cheap at the thrift store. Since Delta's prone to what my mentor calls transition anxiety (mini-SA tha...

Re: Dog eating

I don't know anyone who doesn't think Alaska is part of America :P

And yup, there's good and bad everywhere. We can certainly criticize what needs changing -- this forum may not be the place to do it -- but if we don't recognize and acknowledge what's wrong, it will never be changed!

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

We have a low of 23C and a high of 35C (72F and 95F respectively) recently, plus humidity like walking through a swamp. It's no fun.

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Yay for the nice walk MP! :D

That's what the walk-in closet is for  Kidding -- there are two bedrooms and a living room. Living room will be dog stuff + training area + hangout place, bedroom one for sleeping, bedroom two for crafts. ;P

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

That is hilarious Judy! lol! I was approved for an apartment so Delta and I should be moving out SOON...the sooner the better in my book...just need their "list of things we need" email so I can run that stuff over to them. Then the transplanting should begin! I'll be keeping the fish and anything v...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Fingers crossed for a helpful visit there! Glad you can get in more quickly. Judy, I feel the same way with the hounds I work with. I adore trying to figure out how to make our goals line up so they'll decide to work with me, but I would not like to live with one, haha. :) That sounds like a fantast...

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Agreed! Two weeks for a vaccination? Sure! For a new and odd health concern? It's a bit ridiculous. I hope your boss's vet has openings before then!

Re: What are you and your dogs up to today? Part 2

Hoping Bax does well. :( Is there a vet facility in your area that has different hours, or any chance of getting him in on a lunch break for a quick exam? I've decided to get into Nosework finally, so I looked to our local good dog sports facility aaand...they're remodeling over the summer. No class...

Re: Helping choose

Or perhaps a responsible rescue with a foster system -- many dogs behave very differently in the shelter environment than they do at home. The hyper ones that never stop jumping turn into couch potatoes and the quiet sweet ones become fearful and reactive :P But yes, if they have no idea where to st...

Re: Helping choose

The newfs we've had in classes haven't been stubborn or boisterous. They take their time about things and aren't fast to respond (it seems like it often takes cues longer to go from "perceived" to "acted on" in the giants), but there's no "you're asking me to do something, so I WON'T do that!" They'...

Re: So you think you want a Giant schnauzer?

We don't get many giant schnauzers around here, but the trainers I've talked to that have worked with them do not agree that schnauz are "ten times more intense" than GSDs. Maybe it's a regional difference as I'm talking to trainers mostly over the US rather than the UK. :)

Re: Help with potty training!

Possibly anxiety if the vet doesn't think it's medical -- still, peeing in her crate is a concern. I might get a second opinion from a vet and if cleared medically again, look to build confidence and possibly see if an anti-anxiety med helps.
