Re: Leonberger?
Obedience training should start at 12 weeks? Bit late. Don't tell the trainer mentioned above that you shouldn't keep more than one. The trouble with sites like that is that they write in sweeping generalisations and of course there are variations in every breed. There's no substitute for meeting th...

Re: Difference between Showline and working line border collies?
Going back to the question of exercise, bcs don't need anywhere near as much as many people think. A healthy example of the breed will take as much as is on offer but won't need it. The very best favour anyone can do for their bc is to teach it to switch off and be content with its own company. Cons...

Re: Difference between Showline and working line border collies?
Genetically pretty much separate breeds from recent research. Bear in mind that the show world breeds for what a dog looks like, not what it can do. If you want a dog for sports you are better getting one that has been bred with a desire to work with and please humans, and that isn't the show type. ...

Re: Soft coated Wheaton terrier?
Only known a couple - both pretty nervous which I gather is not uncommon.
Not very numerous so you run into the problems of a small gene pool.

Re: Choosing breeds?
1 and 6 are somewhat contradictory. You aren't going to get a perfect dog whatever you choose. There are never any guarantees. Cockerpoos - depends to a large extent whether the cocker part is show or working type. Very important to know. Need regular grooming though whichever type. If Elsa wants a ...

Re: Belgian Shepherd (groenendael)
Just thinking, comparing a Groenendael with a GSD is like comparing a Rough Collie with BC.

The first things I would look at in any breed are health problems and life expectancy.

Re: My Toy Pomeranian has a Luxating Patella
A friend's young JR had the op a little while ago and is competing at the World Agility Champs this year. The longer you leave it the more chance of irreversible damage. Your dog is young for a small breed and could have many active years ahead of it if treated properly now. However, the only people...

Re: Belgian Shepherd (groenendael)
My mother used to breed them many years ago. They were OK but nowadays I don't like the stiff and upright conformation and they seem to be more nervy than I remember. Same applies to Tervs.

Re: Labrador breeders?
Just read your earlier thread. Puppies of any breed or crossbreed are hard work and it seems like you will be the main carer with your daughters away or working, plus who knows what the future holds for them? That being the case the choice should ultimately be yours and should take into account expe...

Re: Labrador breeders?
Depends what you want in a dog. I would always look for working bred of any breed so the first one wouldn't interest me at all. On the other hand, if you want a relatively calm pet and don't intend to do anything particularly active with it Mau e the first one would hit you better.

Re: Your Take On Neutering / Spaying and When
All but one of mine have been neutered between 6 and 12 months without any adverse effects. Currently there are a nearly 10 year old still competing at top level in agility, 2 at 12 and one 15. All those are rescues. The exception is my one bought dog that is 13 months old. The jury is out as to whe...

Re: Sadness..
Communal cremation and no ashes here with mine. It's just a shell and the essence will always be in my heart.
I have kept collars and bowls together with significant achievements but never look at them.
I have a 15 year old too and think I am prepared and reconciled to being without her some day soon.

Re: Rough collie Help
We've lived in this house with the same neighbours for 27 years and they are on their 3rd RC in that time. The first 2 died at 8 of cancer which is common in the breed. This one is bucking the trend at 12. By my standards all have been pretty boring dogs but some people don't want lively and intelli...
