Re: Crazy Adolescent Collie/Staffy
The next time your dog nips, gums, or whatever, you need to make two quick, high-pitched, one-syllable words such as "Uh Uh", such as when puppies play and one gets rough, the other puppy will make a similar sound or noise. The other thing you must do is when your dog comes at you to jump...

Re: Crazy Adolescent Collie/Staffy
I'm glad there are some people who don't see tug as a horrible game to play with your dog. I wen to a Pet Smart when I was visiting my mother in the city, and a one of their trainers was handling a young boxer. We started talking about dogs in general and I told her about Violet. She asked what kind...

Re: Crazy Adolescent Collie/Staffy
Thank you all for your thoughts! Usually I let her out in the back because it’s the best place for her to run. We don’t have any dog parks here, or large spaces where I can trust her to be safe running around, so I use the yard for that. Obviously, it shouldn’t be the main source of physical activit...

Crazy Adolescent Collie/Staffy
Hello all, I adopted Violet almost one year ago (it will be exactly one year in April) and she was very sweet and mellow. A few days after being acclimated to our home, she turned into her true self - an energetic, jumping, tugging, sweet but emotionally trying puppy. She was seven months then, or s...

Re: Helping the "New Dog" to Get Along With the "First" Dog
Brandi is definitely not interested in play, and that's completely understandable. If Violet was much smaller, I don't think it would be as much of an issue. I had the both of them in my father's front yard a few days ago, to see how they would interact. Brandi's snapping made a lasting impression o...

Re: Recently adopted mixed pup
And probably taller. The man who lives behind me has a Pointer (along with a Lab) and he/she is larger than Violet. Both dogs have also been trained to kill coyotes, as I was informed by their owner, and I shouldn't "let her wander into" his yard. I'm trying to anticipate how much ...

Re: Recently adopted mixed pup
Thanks! I take it you have a Pointer, UKChloeT? What's perplexing to me is that her body isn't as compact and stocky as a Staffie. She has a very defined waist and long legs, which looks more like a Pointer body. But that could also be the Border Collie. She's also not very large, as that gate she's...

Re: Annual bath time!!
Well, that makes more sense! Hopefully they don't end up outside in the mud after all of that work. I'm lucky with Violet in that respect, as her hair is so short she normally air dries. Although she could never give Fabio a run for his money like Ellie could!

Re: Annual bath time!!
Aw, your dogs are beautiful! I have my hands full just giving one dog a bath. Violet wriggles out of my grasp and runs into the living room to rub herself on the couch. I don't know how you do it!

Re: Helping the "New Dog" to Get Along With the "First" Dog
I was looking for a post like this. While I don't have two dogs at my home, I do live very close to my father who still cares for the family dog, a 13 year old toy poodle. When I adopted Violet, my 9 month old Collie mix, I had hoped that the two would at least tolerate each other enough to be in th...

Hello from Illinois!
Hi there, I should have introduced myself earlier, so forgive me. My name is Jamie and my pup Violet is a 9 month old Collie/Staffordshire Terrier (most likely) mix. I'm here because an old friend and fellow dog lover swears by Victoria's methods, and I want to be the best owner/mother possible. :D

Re: Recently adopted mixed pup
I can see the terrier in her face, even though her hips are pretty lean. That must be the collie. She is definitely very smart. I made a comment to my sister about how Violet reminded me of a raptor from Jurassic Park and how she'd be opening doors next. Well, I shouldn't have said that, because a f...

Recently adopted mixed pup
Hi all, Before I adopted Violet from a local shelter in late April, I was told that she was a Pointer/Lab mix by one of the main volunteers. When I went to see her, her kennel said Staffordshire Terrier/Pointer. And her adoption papers say Border Collie mix. Woo! Confused yet? http://i56.tinypic.com...
