Update on Preston
Hi everyone, It's been quite a long time since I posted, but I felt an update on Preston was in order. Well, today he played with the big dogs at the the dog park and we both survived  He has come a very, very, long way since he came to me last May. We have worked hard everyday on a ton of ...

Re: Meet Preston
Lol, I know, totally different looking dog isn't he? My confused neighbors thought I had gotten another new dog when they saw him after the haircut. He was badly matted, hence the shave down, but is quickly getting fuzzy again.

Re: Urinating on another dog
Thanks Emmabeth. Yes, he actually lifted his leg and urinated on Bear while sniffing Bear's rear, then continued to be submissive/waggy waggy. He would run to me full of bounce and happiness, run back to Bear, come back to me bouncy and happy again, and so on. He wasn't all over Bear, just content t...

Urinating on another dog
Hi everyone, During the past two weeks I have worked with Preston and his issue with other dogs by remaining at a distance, but praising and giving him treats when he looks at another dog. Last week when a loose dog quietly approached him, I blocked the approach as best I could and gave Preston a lo...

Cleaning the carpets
I purchased a carpet clearner/extractor and plan to do the whole house this week. Can someone tell me what the vinegar/water ratio is? I have a lot of old stains from my geriatric dog that passed last year, and they are becoming an eyesore (at least to me).

Re: Am I doing this correctly?
Jacksdad, What Preston does is if he see or hears another dog he begins to whine. Sometimes he does this cry/howl. I've been working on his being quite by teaching "quiet" and having him focus on me, both of which he is doing very well. Prior to yesterday, I was keeping him away from other...

Re: Am I doing this correctly?
Thank you Mattie Emmabeth, your analogy makes complete sense. This morning we encountered one dog. Preston began his usual whine once he spotted it, but sat and watched me quietly as he received his treat. As the dog and owner passed, Preston stayed focused on me. I waited for him to look at the oth...

Re: Am I doing this correctly?
Thanks Emmabeth, I will stop the encounters. I thought that by giving him treats while he was quiet when around other dogs was teaching him that being in their presence was a nice thing.

Am I doing this correctly?
Hi everyone, I finally found a treat that Preston is crazy about (string cheese), which has greatly increased his eagerness to please :D The past five days have been focused on teaching him to "watch". He is so good at it now, not 100% perfect, but very close. During this time I didn't all...

Re: A good week
way to go. lots of hard work paying off...feels good doesn't it? It does feel good! We just returned from a walk around the fishing pond and he was so good. Preston also received a wonderful compliment from a gentleman that was fishing, who commented that Preston was one of the best behaved dogs in...

Re: How to toilet train your puppy or adult dog.
Wow Nettle, thank you for the education, and no, it wasn't boring at all! I will admit I had to look up the definition of "pedantic" So I will rephrase my original statement to, "If what is thought to be terrier in Preston is actually a Mini Schnauzer, I am quite familiar with t...

Re: How to toilet train your puppy or adult dog.
Mini schnauzers are not terriers  you have a few grades up to go in terms of prey drive  and general trying behaviour Nettle, I'm confused by your post. Per the AKC, Mini Schnauzers are in the Terrier group, http://www.akc.org/breeds/miniature_schnauzer/. It's the Beagle that isn't a ...

Re: A good week
Aww, thank you so much Mattie. This morning...I took him out, said "go potty" (I say go potty, not go pee as I said I did in my original post), and he did it immediately, no leash, and with squirrel distraction! He doesn't empty his bladder completely, so I waited a minute, said "go p...

Introducing a dog to a horse.
Hi, I've noticed there are quite a few members that are horse owners, so I'm hoping someone can give me advice on how to introduce Preston to horses. I have a mare, Opal, that is boarded at an 18 stall barn. Opal, along with the other horses, are all dog friendly, and the dogs that live on the prope...
