I've always had animals at home, from guinea pigs, cats, and playful dogs. It was pretty clear to me that I wanted to work with animals in some shape or form. But it wasn't until a few years back when I adopted my current furry companion, Doug, from a rescue centre. Doug was found wandering aimlessly around a local park. They estimated his age to be around 4-5 years old, and although he wasn't too keen on toys, he was an all-around friendly boy. However, there was a teeny-tiny hitch: Doug didn’t like a lot of other dogs. Whenever he spotted one, he'd, lunge, bark, and pull on the lead like a dog on a mission. Needless to say, it felt embarrassed. I found myself at a loss, resorting to all sorts of tactics to avoid any canine confrontations. I'd take Doug out at odd hours, trying my best to dodge other dog owners. I also realised that had ’separation related behaviours’. Barking, whining amongst others. He once even devoured a whole box of Quality Street chocolates in my daughter's room, wrappers and all! That incident led to me installing locks on every door in the house, because he was very good at opening them.
In my quest to find solutions, I scoured the vast realm of the internet for advice. This was the time when famous dog trainers were making waves on TV. However, some of their techniques didn't quite sit right with me. That's when I discovered the wondrous world of positive reinforcement training with Victoria Stillwell. I took the plunge and enrolled in the Victoria Stillwell Academy, where I graduated with distinction.
Having experienced the trials and tribulations of handling a reactive dog firsthand, I developed an unwavering passion for helping others who found themselves in similar predicaments. That's why I became a dog trainer. I sought out training materials, delving into the depths of the internet, and immersed myself in positive reinforcement techniques. I'm proud to say that I'm now a Separation Anxiety Pro Trainer certified by Julie Naismith. Additionally, I'm a member of The Dog Training College, and I've attended various dog training workshops, by IMDT. I engaged in Janet Finlay's mentorship program and participated in other relevant training initiatives. My dedication to acquiring advanced knowledge and skills in dog training demonstrates my unwavering pursuit of excellence in my profession. Now, armed with my knowledge and experience, I'm on a mission to assist fellow dog owners and guardians, guiding them through the difficult challenges that they may come across. It's not just a job; it's a passion that I continue to have. Together, I will help you with the challenges you have, one wagging tail at a time!
