Today is Cinco de Mayo! This holiday is in recognition of the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. While not a holiday commonly associated with pets, if you are anything like me, you are always looking for an excuse to celebrate any holiday with your dog.
That’s why I would like to share with you 4 ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with your dog!
Enjoy a Mexican feast!
For those pet parents who are culinarily inclined, feel free to create a dog-friendly Cinco de Mayo recipe for dinner. Like these pup-quitos from Petcha.com.
You might find some of these potentially toxic ingredients in traditional Mexican dishes that are bad for your dog: avocado, onions and garlic, dairy products, or fat trimmings and bones. - PetMD
NOTE: Be aware of any allergies your dog might have, and if your dog has a sensitive stomach, please avoid changing their diet suddenly.
Throw a party!
As someone with Mexican heritage, there is nothing I love more than attending an impromptu party with my friends and family and enjoying some authentic Mexican food. While the food at this party might not be for your dogs, you could always have a friend or family member bring over a playmate so that your dog can enjoy the festivities as well.
Celebrate with New Toys!
According to DogMilk, BarkShop recently released their Squeak-O De Mayo toy collection, which is sure to make the dog in your life very happy!
One of our favorite dog toy brands has recently introduced a brand new Taco Dog Toy, which pairs well with their Paws Lite Dog Beer toy for a Cinco de Mayo celebration! For doggies with sensitive stomachs, new dog toys might be the best way to celebrate the holiday!
Help a Mexican Dog Breed
If festivities don’t seem appealing to you this year, you could always join in on the Cinco de Mayo spirit by donating to a local organization that supports Mexican dog breeds. According to the AKC recognized breed list, there are two dog breeds (one very popular and one very rare) that are native to Mexico; the Chihuahua and Xoloitzcuintli.
Fun Fact: Did you know that both the Chihuahua and the Xoloitzcuintli are believed to have healing powers in Mexico? According to the AKC, people believe that Chihuahuas have healing powers that help people with asthma, while Xoloitzcuintlis are believed to cure or prevent diseases that include rheumatism, insomnia, toothaches, & asthma.
Both breeds have national rescues that are always looking for donations to protect and support these breeds.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, I wish you a wonderful day with your dog! Happy Cinco de Mayo!
