Sometimes heroes walk on four legs.
Major is a pit bull-lab mix who is trained to help his owner, Terry McGlade, cope with PTSD and to sense his seizures. McGlade served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan and was injured by a roadside bomb. Major has been his constant companion for about two years and, in this case, became his hero.
When McGlade began to suffer a seizure, Major used his teeth to pull his cell phone out of his pocket and was able to get the phone to dial 911 by stepping on the screen. The phone was set up to automatically dial 911 when the screen was pressed for several seconds. McGlade says that if Major had not been able to alert responders, he would have been in severe trouble.
Major even waited for first responders at the curb and led them to where his owner was laying unconscious.
McGlade has now submitted Major for the 2014 Hero Dog Awards. Good luck, Major!
